Sierra is a passionate photographer who wishes to capture the world around her for what it is. She captures her muse in their honest forms, and that’s what makes her photographs special. I’ve had the privilege of shooting with her in the past, and I can truly say it was a great experience. Here’s your chance to meet Sierra!

What are you involved in here at VSU?

I’m a photographer and the Photo Editor for The Spectator, as well a member of Black Student League and Creative Media and Marketing. How long have you been doing photography?

For about 7 years. What made you decide to get into photography?

My uncle is a photographer in Atlanta and I was able to go on shoots and watch him edit photographs from time to time.
He gave me my first film camera as well. It became something I enjoyed and turned into more than just a hobby.

What do you want to pursue after graduation?

I’m looking to work with a local magazine or newspaper. And establish a photography business of my own.
I’m really open to anything and wouldn’t mind traveling to do freelance work. What do you want to convey with your photographs?

Honesty, I want to allow people to be honest with me in their emotions and in turn I can show them that it’s nothing that
they should be afraid of hiding.

How do you showcase yourself and others through your photographs?

I feel like my photographs are clean, yet raw. They’re an honest depiction of who that person is. How do you use your photographs to coincide with your social activism?

I have been pushing myself to do more coverage of minority and marginalized groups such as events surrounding the Trayvon Martin Trial and the LGBTQ community. I believe that all groups deserve positive representation in the media and being able to capture those moments to document are invaluable.

How do you practice time management? Any tips?

List. I write a list for everything and keep a book or notebook close to sketch ideas. I usually write them in the morning, throughout my day and at the end of the day. It reminds me of things I may have missed or can move over to the next day. It helps a lot when you need to dump everything from the day on to a piece of paper. And I feel accomplished whenever I’m able to cross something off my list.
