5 Simple Ways to Treat Yo’ Self

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

The phrase Treat Yo’Self comes from Season 4 Episode 4 of Parks and Recreation. Donna and Tom are celebrating their annual Treat Yo Self Day, which is solely devoted to experiencing the finer things in life. From start to finish, the day consists only of the things that they love and they put no limit on themselves; where they would usually talk themselves out of splurging, they say “Treat Yo’ Self!” After a little convincing, they’re able to pull their friend and coworker, Ben, into the trend too. I highly recommend you watch this show to fully understand the context because there’s no way I can do it justice, plus it’s hilarious (available on Netflix and Hulu). Even though the characters are fictional, the concept definitely is not! While you may be balling on a budget and unable to go to the fanciest eateries and buy bags full of the nicest things, there are five things in particular that are quite reasonable and will feel just as good:

1.      Manicure and Pedicure:

Do I even need to explain this one? Do it, whether you “need” it or not (which is ridiculous because you can never not need one). Go for the deluxe treatment. The hot rocks, the calf massage, etc. You deserve the best of the best, this time, the bare minimum just will not do!

2.     Girls Night Out:

PARTYYYY!!! If you’re above the age of 21, have a drink and take on the town with your squad. Maybe this means going to a nice lounge or taking it up a notch and club-hopping. As long as you’re drinking responsibly and keeping it classy, why not? Step out with the ones that you find the least annoying and the most fun–leave everyone else in their respective places.

3.      Buy IT:

Whatever popped into your head when you saw the word “it”, I’m giving you the go-ahead to purchase it. As long as it’s within reason and the funds are there (meaning you won’t be in the hole afterward), spend that hard-earned moolah on yourself! Buying the necessities becomes boring and routine after a while, so step outside of the adulting box and be a little spontaneous. Don’t go overboard, though.

4.      Indulge In Your Fave Dessert:

Can’t you just taste it now? There has to be something that’s kind of like an edible guilty pleasure for you; maybe it’s a slice of heavenly cheesecake or a cookie covered in fudge, who cares about calories? Just order it and eat it! Worry about the consequences later or never! Why wait for the next special occasion when you should have it now?

5.      Netflix & Chill:

No, this isn’t code for sex, but if that’s what floats your boat *insert smirking Emoji here* then go for it, but be safe and smart about it, too.

In all seriousness, just a night of relaxation in your own space can be total bliss for someone who doesn’t get to enjoy that luxury often. Plus, it feels a lot better when you’re not neglecting responsibilities, but rewarding yourself instead!

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in striving to be great that we forget to stop and pat ourselves on the back! Don’t wait for a perfect moment or a day when you may deserve it more because it’s likely that you’ll never find that “right” time. Take advantage of the opportunity NOW. There’s no time for a present like the present.
