7 Essentials to Bring for a March or Rally

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWB chapter.

Lately there has been a lot of protests on certain laws, from women’s march to the standing in solideraty with immigrants rally. If you have been wanting to go to one but don’t know what to bring or wear, well then here are 7 essentials for when you go to a rally or march!

Layers

Being that we are still in the winter, at times temperatures can be freezing. Make sure to layer up so if you get too hot, you don’t have to worry too much on whether or not you’ll be cold. A thin long sleeve with a sweater and a jacket are great examples of these layers.

Comfortable shoes

Some of the marches can be miles long so making sure that your feet are getting the right support is very important.

Also make sure that they withstand the elements. Try to steer away from shoes that have a cloth like material, for example converse, vans, and flats.  This is important because you don’t want water to go through your shoe, especially when you can’t go home right away.

Portable charger

This is a life hack all together. Whether you are live streaming the protest, taking pictures or taking videos. At the end the last thing you want to worry about is your phone dying and franticly trying to find a place that has an outlet to charge your phone. This will definitely prevent your love ones or friends worrying if you’re okay.

Poster Sign

Bringing a sign is something that is very common, it’s not something that you must have but it can definitely voice your opinion. It can be anything as simple as “Black Lives Matter” to more comical or clever things like “ If God hates gays why are we so cute.”

Snacks and Water

Rallies and marches can last a while and it can become tiring. Bringing snacks like a sandwich and water can really help you when you are starting to feel tired.

Cash

Carrying cash at times can be a lot easier and helps you keep track of money being spent. Putting the exact amount of cash in a zip lock bag can really help when you are taking the bus so you don’t have to go through your backpack or purse digging for dollar bills and quarters. It’s also greats for if you want to stop at a Starbucks and want to get a little something but not spend too much, it’s almost like a budget.

Transportation information

Make sure if you are taking public transportation know where the bus stops are located, what times they are available, and any alternative routes just in case something happens.

If you are taking Lyft, make sure to budget in how much the cost will be to get home and check if the cost at different time because at sometimes it cost more at certain times.
