About a year ago, I had a terrible habit—biting my nails. Due to my anxiety, I was constantly nibbling on them until they were bleeding. I knew that it was disgusting, but it was a bad habit that I could not break for the life of me.It would drive my boyfriend, Raffy, nuts. He felt so bad for my damaged fingers that he [declared] that something needed to be done. I agreed whole-heartedly because I was very self-conscious of them. One Sunday morning, Raffy took my hand and looked at it, shaking his head. “Katie, we are taking you to get your nails done,” he insisted.

My mother had always been against those people who regularly get their nails done. “Who has that kind of time and money?” she would mutter as we passed the nail salons. Being the diva I am, I have always wanted to have pretty nails, but every time I thought about it, I would hear my mother’s voice in my head. So, when Raffy offered to take me to get my nails done, I shyly accepted.

After that, it was like magic. Since I was spending about $30 every three weeks to get my nails done, I never bit them. As a result, they grew longer and longer until I was getting compliments left and right for my beautiful nails. My family could not believe how much my nails had changed and how pretty they looked. Even my mother, after some warming up, agreed that they looked great.

It’s been about a year since I first stopped biting my nails. I still go to the nail salon ever three or four weeks to get a gel manicure. Some people may call it high maintenance, but it has been a really great change for me. Having beautiful nails has even boosted my self-confidence and I feel so much better about myself. If you are someone who struggled with the bad habit of biting your nails, try saving a little money each month to get your nails professionally done; it will boost your self-esteem and, hopefully, it will break the habit.
