Everything You Need to Know About Hijabs, Burqas, And Niqabs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Listen up everyone…there is a difference between hijabs, burqas, and niqabs and they are all unique to someone’s culture. Our world is so great that we have all kinds of people living in it, the problem is, not a lot of people know very much about the scarves and veils that we so commonly see. They are often just assumed to always be a hijab. I am going to help you with this confusion and raise awareness that we are all unique and different to our cultures and our religions, and that is something to be celebrated, not shunned.

Hijab

Hijab, an Arabic word meaning barrier, is a scarf that is worn by Muslim women. Hijabs do not cover as much as other Islamic coverings, however, it is still a symbol of modesty.

Burqa

The most concealing of all Islamics veils, the burqa consists of one long piece and a mesh face section.

Niqabs

Niqabs are worn with only the eyes showing.

Muslim women do not have it easy in America. They are constantly being called terrorists and other demeaning names. The most important thing everyone should remember is that these people are no different than us, and they deserve respect just like everyone else. They are not oppressed because they are wearing a scarf, they wear it as a choice. It is important to know more about these people so that we can avoid ignorance to their culture and their religion.
