5 Ways to Practice Self-Care this Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

It’s inevitable that as the cold moves in and the days get darker it gets more difficult to take care of ourselves. Fight the urge to hide out this winter and use these five tips for conquering the cold.

1) Get involved in winter activities

As much as you might want to stay inside your warm house, it’s still important to get outside and get fresh air. Use the snow to your advantage and participate in winter activities like skiing, skating, sledding, or even going for a walk. The brisk air will wake your senses and leave you feeling refreshed.2) Maintain a healthy eating routine

Comfort foods can be very appealing when the weather is dreary, but don’t search for a pick-me-up in a heavy, high-calorie dish that will likely leave you feeling more sluggish. Shop for brightly colored seasonal foods like squash that have the feeling of winter without the feeling of regret. (Occasional cheats are more than necessary)3) Moisturize your skin

Dry air often leaves skin flakey and uncomfortable. Making sure that you use lotion every day will fight you skin’s urge to flake and help return that beautiful, natural glow.4) Take care of your mental health

Pretty much everyone has experienced the urge to hide away when winter moves in, and a lot of people can vouch that seasonal depression is real. The most important thing to take care of during the cold months is mental health, and this looks different for everyone. Make a list of things that make you happy and be sure to take time to do these things. Drink hot tea, cuddle up with a good book, burn a seasonal candle, whatever it is that puts you in a good place.5) Listen to Christmas music as soon as Thanksgiving is over (or before)

Everyone knows the best part of winter is Christmas, and somehow Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is still the go-to rock out song since it came out in 1994. We all know this is the true way to stay happy this winter, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
