Social media is the place to make your life look pretty. But in reality, our lives aren’t always as perfect as our insta-themes might suggest. If our captions were totally honest, here’s what they might say.

What it really means: It took me 70 tries before getting a selfie I liked and I’ll probably start hating it if I look at it for 1 second longer, so here’s a quote that has nothing to do with anything but sounds nice. Please like it to raise my self esteem.

What it really means: I couldn’t think of a caption.

What it really means: I got totally wasted last night. My mascara was running, I was sweating like a man, and I looked like a maniac. Good thing you can’t tell from this picture!

What your caption says: Happy mother’s day/father’s day/birthday to a parent/grandparent
What it really means: Sure, the subject of my photo does not have Instagram and will probably never see this. But my followers will see how family focused I am and that’s what counts, right?

What it really means: I was cute once. Here’s proof.
