It goes far beyond the classic story of an ordinary kid from suburbia, trying to make it big with a few rhymes and a drum to his fingertips. This involves passion, a deep loyalty towards fans, and actively pursuing a dream on its way to reality. Joey Gags, formally known as Joseph Gagliardo, is the rapper at UVM that everybody should know…and they do.

Joey Gags got his start with a set of drums, soon taking it further to that local beat we all love to hear bumping in the background. Gagliardo explains that when he began taking his music to a different level, he was pleased with the reactions. “People started actually liking it, I got more excited to do more stuff, to get more involved,” he says. From then on, it only took a stroke a genius and a tune into true emotion to get popular songs, like “Spliffs,” that you can’t help but sing along to. Its the words within the rap that give the jump to your step and allow him to express his individuality as a musician. “If you knew me, that’s me,” he says.

Also don’t let the fact of him being a full-time student at the “Groovy UV” fool you, his fame extends far past the campus green. In November 2010, Joey Gags opened up the stage with Spose for Chris Webby, leaving fans with lyrics of “Sing It Loud” pouring off the tips of their tongues. His passion becomes more evident when sharing his experience, explaining it as the ultimate high. “When i’m performing, there’s no other feeling…you have your closest friends there partying and singing along, having a good time. That rush, that feeling is the best feeling in the world. As long as your making other people happy…that’s the best.”

Gagliardo has also worked in collaboration with local artists like Jake Helman (also know as Jacob Es), Ian Dunn, Alex Denton, George Mirageas, and producer, Baby J (also known as Plan Z), making his name spread like a brush fire. Furthermore, fans off campus, students, and other popular faces, such as Charlie Hudson (also known as Charlie like the River), are to thank for passing on the Joey Gags feel, that hip hop beat from the heart.

Keep an eye out for this UVM student pursuing his fresh fame with a new EP by the end of the semester! Until then, you can “like” Joey Gags on facebook for updates!
