New York Fashion Week Recap: Trends to Expect in 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

It’s that time of year again. The air is charged with back-to-school excitement and a hint of Pumpkin Spice as people eagerly await the changing leaves and crisp temperatures of fall. More importantly, however, the beginning of September signals one of the biggest weeks in pop culture. Yes, I’m talking about New York Fashion Week, when models, celebrities, and bloggers alike gather in New York City to see what is in store for fashion in the upcoming year.

Thanks to the all-access effect of social media, anyone with an Instagram or Snapchat account basically had a front row ticket to this season’s hottest shows. From Bella Hadid’s street style snaps, to Kim Kardashian’s full coverage of the Yeezy Season 4 show, the fashion week craze, beginning on September 7th, was impossible to miss.

Just in case you aren’t an avid follower of social media celebs, we’ve put together a list of the biggest trends to watch for 2017, straight off the runway. Though spring feels like an infinitely long time from now, it is never too early to tune into what is trending in the fashion world.

1. Sunny Orange

Good news, Wahoos! Orange is officially the color of spring 2017. Like the vibrant hue of this floral maxi dress from Tory Burch’s collection, bright orange provided a pop of color on runways ranging from Victoria Beckham to Christian Siriano. Though Elle Woods once declared, “Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed,” a lot has changed since 2001. Wear your orange UVA gear with pride. It will be totally trendy this spring.

2. Bold Stripes

One of the most wearable trends from Fashion Week, horizontal stripes will become the new neutral in 2017. This Opening Ceremony body-con dress is a perfect piece to transition from winter to spring, with its long sleeves and fun pattern. Stripes can put a playful twist on classic silhouettes like this one, or they can add a nautical vibe to casual looks, as shown in the Gigi Hadid x Tommy Hilfiger collection.

3. Retro Florals

While florals for spring might seem totally obvious, they’ve never been done like this before. Dainty, understated flower patterns have been swapped for oversized, retro prints. Brightly colored, flowery dresses will be the perfect way to welcome the new season, such as this Michael Kors frock. The 70s inspired color schemes of Michael Kors and Tory Burch’s collections put a nostalgic spin on a spring staple.

4. Platforms

Get ready to trade your ankle-breaking stilettos for a more practical alternative. Platforms were everywhere during Fashion Week this year, from the flatform sandals at Proenza Schouler pictured above, to Wonder-Woman inspired boots at Marc Jacobs, to studded oxfords at Coach. Start searching for an amazing pair of platform heels to break out at your spring formal!
