Cozy Tunes for the Cold Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

The temperature is finally dropping which means you can finally break out all of your cold weather ~aesthetic~ essentials. And what better to pair with your coat and gloves than a new playlist full of artists that will make your cold walk to class a more bearable. Check out the list below for some new songs and artists!

1. Rex Orange County

This 19-year-old South Londoner has taken over the underground music scene with his songs that fluidly switch from slow and sweet to catchy yet insightful. He has collaborated with Tyler the Creator in the past but his solo career is what makes him stand apart from the rest. Not to mention his memorable song titles such as “Apricot Princess” and “Corduroy Dreams.” It’s hard to label which are my favorites, but the first ones that cemented my love for him were “Best Friend,” “Loving is Easy,” and “Know Love.”

2. Daniel Caesar

If you’re an R&B fan (which everyone is when stuck inside, not wanting to brave the bitter cold), Daniel Caesar is worth checking out. His song “Get You (feat. Kali Uchis)” is perfect for any occasion, with its smooth beat and the soulful lyrics. The singer-songwriter built his fan base through a series of independently released EPs and recently released his debut album, Freudian, in August 2017. Use the cold weather as an excuse to catch up on this up-and-comer before spring.

3. Hippo Campus

Indie boy bands anyone? One of the reasons I love Hippo Campus, apart from their music, is their story. They began as a group of friends in two different bands and one day decided to join forces—a decision that has not yet hurt them in the least. This Minneapolis-based group writes insightful lyrics about adulthood that pair harmoniously with the beats and melodies they come up with. Their debut album, Landmark, was released in early 2017 and the band released an EP in September about life on the road titled warm glow. On a final note, “Way It Goes” is the perfect song to listen to on repeat to during a snowy day with friends.

4. Post Animal

I would describe this band as Tame Impala’s younger brother that people always assume is older, in the sense that Post Animal doesn’t hesitate with crazy, psychedelic guitar solos. Also, I can’t forget to mention that Joe Keery (the infamous Steve Harrington in “Stranger Things”) is the drummer. Joke’s on those who laughed at Steve’s hair because we all know how important great hair is to a great drummer.

5. On My Mind (Jorja Smith X Preditah)

This is a great song to listen to when on the move, as in when you are unmotivated to go to the library because the sunset is at 4:30 and you’re struggling to find the motivation. All I need to say to sell it, to be honest.
