5 Girl-Power TV Shows to Binge This Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

There is nothing worse than the unexpected shock and emptiness of realizing that you are on the last episode of your new favorite TV series…It’s just as bad as the feeling of confronting your unhealthy Netflix addiction when the “Are you still watching?” message pops up on your computer screen. While most people would take these things as signs to maybe, I don’t know, try going outside for a change, I understand them to mean that it is simply time to find a new series to binge-watch.

As a TV enthusiast and lifelong fan of the Spice Girls, I have lately been gravitating towards shows with female-centric casts and tons of unapologetic girl power. For those of you who are in that transitional phase of looking for a new series to use as an excuse to avoid social interaction, check out this list of 5 amazing shows that are all about female empowerment!

1. Big Little Lies

Since this new HBO miniseries premiered in February, the buzz has been nonstop…and for good reason, too. With an amazing cast of badass women like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley, Big Little Lies tackles the trials of motherhood in a viciously gossipy, affluent California town. Throw in a murder mystery, a killer soundtrack, and Witherspoon’s witty one-liners, and you’ve got perfect binge-watching material. Plus, there’s only seven episodes, so you could totally finish it in a weekend.

2. Girls

If you haven’t already seen Girls, you are missing out on a pop culture gem that will never fail to make you laugh and cry in the same episode. Currently in its last season, Girls addresses that awkward, post-grad phase in which you are technically an adult, but definitely don’t feel like one. Since we will all be there one day, some of us sooner than others, this smart, hilarious show can feel shockingly relatable.

3. Victoria

Is there anything more empowering than an 18-year-old girl ascending the throne of England and refusing to let anyone tell her how to rule her country? This 2016 PBS series provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of Britain’s teenage monarch. You’ll be hooked on the historical drama as you root for the headstrong Queen Victoria to prove to her skeptics that girls can do anything.

4. Broad City

Abbi and Ilana of Broad City are the epitome of friendship goals. Not only do they star in the show, but the real-life BFFs also created it after getting positive feedback on their web series of the same name. It is impossible not to love a TV series in which the constant refrain of “YAAAAS KWEEN” is echoed multiple times per episode, never losing its comedic effect. Even Hillary Clinton loves the show, appearing as a guest star in an episode last year.

5. Sex and the City

Of course, no list of girl-power TV shows is complete without Sex and the City. Though most of us have probably seen reruns on E! or, unfortunately, the disappointingly over-the-top movies, I highly reccommend watching the entire series to get the full effect. Between the enviable fashion, the whirlwind romances, and the emphasis on female friendship above all else, Sex and the City is a must-watch show for any 20-something girl.
