12 “Signs” That Saturday was a Successful College GameDay

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

It was hard to miss the presence of College GameDay on grounds this past Saturday. For those of you who aren’t as informed about the college basketball scene, College GameDay is a special segment on ESPN highlighting important basketball games. This past week, No. 3 UVA was featured for the second time and the second year in a row for their big face-off against No.7 North Carolina.

While the game itself was enough to get students excited about the amazing basketball program that we have here on Grounds, waking up, and even camping out, in anticipation of the 9 am filming of College Game Day spoke to our amazing school spirit. Hopefully the Good Ole Song is right in saying that “it cheers our hearts and warms our blood to hear them shout and roar,” because many die-hard Hoos were up at the crack of dawn waiting to enter John Paul Jones arena for a chance to be featured in the crowd on College GameDay.

Host of College GameDay Rece Davis said that the crowd that packed JPJ early Saturday morning was the most responsive crowd that the basketball version of the GameDay show has seen in its 12 year run. Despite being a smaller school compared to other big basketball programs such as the University of Kentucky, the crowd that filled a little over half of JPJ on Saturday rocked the house. While the players themselves deserve endless praise and recognition for their efforts, the fans made the day especially legendary and memorable for both our UVA community and the crowds all over the country watching the broadcast.

Whoever called the College of Arts & Sciences the College of Arts & Crafts may not have been mistaken on Saturday, because the Hoos showed up with good spirit, better yelling voices, and arguably the best signs that college game day has seen so far.

Here are some of the highlights:

A wonderful pun on a less-wonderful trend, Netflix and Gill is a play on #13 forward Anthony Gill, who might just be using this phrase to his advantage in the coming weeks if we see more big wins.

There were no confirmed DJ Khaled sightings in JPJ on Saturday, but there is still no confirmation that he wasn’t there.

Simple, yet powerful.

One of my personal favorites, this sign calls out UNC for killing Pawnee, Indiana’s very favorite local celebrity Li’l Sebastian. For those of you who have never seen Parks and Recreation, go watch Parks and Recreation and come back and appreciate this diamond of a sign.

It’s hard to believe that correlation doesn’t mean causation in the case of these signs, as this well-done poster proclaiming #15 shooting guard Malcolm Brogdon the “Brogfather” seems to be related to him being the leader scorer of the night with 26 points.

Steve Harvey can never win, but the Hoos always can.

Honestly all winners.

Good luck turning this in to your ENWR professor.

Anthony Gill was a popular *poster-child* this weekend, and rightly so, as he led the team at halftime with 11 points, finishing with a total of 15 points.

Saturday’s big win is a bipartisan issue that I believe all candidates could rally behind. Vote Tony Bennett in 2016.

This is a very good point. Goo Hoos.

And finally, something we could never forgive UNC for:

RIP Chipotle, but more importantly, RIP UNC.

While all of these signs are winners, UVA’s victory over UNC means that the Hoos have a better chance at landing at landing a top four seed in the ACC Tournament, along with being one game out of first place behind UNC and Miami. #GoHoosGo
