Campus Cutie: Ivan Cuervo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

This Kappa Sig isn’t just another frat boy. He is the Grand Master of Ceremonies in the Executive Committee, a mechanical engineer major, and a gummy worm fanatic. He’s Colombian, and proving to everyone that anything he puts himself up to, he does and does it with charm.

“#RushKappaSig and Go Runners” –Ivan Cuervo

Name and Nickname: Ivan Cuervo, Cuervo (totally like the tequila)

Hometown: Bogota, Colombia

Major and Class: Status: Senior, going into Super Senior year. Mechanical Engineer

Campus Activities: Executive Committee member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, part of the Green Society, and I recently just joined the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Describe yourself in 3 words: cultured, friendly, and hardworking.

Three ways a person can win over your heart: Gummy worms, a caring girl, and being able to speak to me in my first language, which is Spanish. (Don’t get any ideas ladies; he’s taken by me).

Biggest pet peeve: When people ask questions during movies

8 AMs or 3 finals in one day: 8 AMs

Celebrity Crush: Jessica Alba

Why Kappa Sig: They’re the ones that stood out to me the most, had the coolest brothers, and were the least douchey.

Tell us about Colombia: I lived in Colombia until I was 8 and moved back to 13. I don’t remember much from the first time I lived there, but when I went back I went to a great school that was Top 3 in the country. You had to take a test to get in there and the test was from Idaho, which was funny. You have to grow up so quickly and you can definitely see the maturity in even younger kids. We walk everywhere and if you’re not walking, you’re taking public transportation.

What do you love most about Colombia/being Columbian: The culture, definitely. The Spanish that we speak is different, words and accent. People say that it’s the best Spanish there is. The food, the people, everyone is always happy and they have a charm to them (This is true, that’s how he got me).

What’s the coolest thing you’ve gotten to do with Kappa Sig: Going to formals and being able to go to a beach house and a cool house with my brothers is always fun.

What’s your perfect cheat meal: Start off with getting some Bill Miller’s BBQ, get some sweet tea, then maybe head to Cane’s and get a box, or to McDonalds for a McGangBang, and some gummy worms for dessert, obviously.

Why UTSA: Because my sister came here and totally hyped it up for me. (AP: did it live up to the hype?) Totally did, for sure.

What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome since you’ve gotten to UTSA: Besides pledgeship, it was getting accustomed to classes since the high school I went to in Odessa wasn’t the best or very college prep. I had to teach myself how to study and how to really learn in class, and then on top of that in a major that is already extremely difficult to begin with.

Advice to incoming freshmen or underclassmen: Join an organization, as soon as you get on campus, no matter what it is. Doesn’t matter if it’s Greek or not, just try to meet as many people as you can. Your freshman year will be your easiest year, so make it the most fun, as well.
