9 90s Female Fronted Bands You Should Listen To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTRGV chapter.

During the 90s there was an explosion of bands, grunge, pop, and anything in between. Here is a list of nine female fronted bands that you should check out:

1. The Cranberries

This Irish rock band was formed 1989 by previous lead singer Niall Quinn who was replaced a year later by Dolores O’Riordan. You should listen to this band because their music can make you cry and make you rage.

2. The Cardigans

This Swedish rock band formed in 1992, their most popular song is Lovefool, its a catchy and cute song that everyone has probably heard once.

3. Letters to Cleo

Letters to Cleo formed in 1990 and is from Boston! They are most known for their 1994 single, “Here & Now.” Apart from this they are also well-known for their contributions to the “10 Things I Hate About You.”

4. No Doubt

No Doubt was formed in 1986 and they are from Anaheim, California. This badass band has been one of my personal favorite bands for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to them because of my older siblings and now that I am older I can appreciate how truly rad their music was and continues to be.

5. Bikini Kill

This American punk rock band formed in October 1990. The band consisted of of singer/songwriter Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox and drummer Tobi Vail. The original punk rock badass, Kathleen Hanna is a well known for the punk riot grrrl movement. One of their most popular song has to be, “Rebel Girl,” which was featured on Rock Band 2.

6. Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth was formed and based out of New York City in 1981. One of their songs from the 90s was, “Kool Thing.” This song is actually about an interview guitarist, Kim Gordon, had with LL Cool J for Spin Magazine, it’s really worth the listen!

7. 4 Non Blondes

4 Non Blondes formed in 1989 and they are from San Francisco. In 1993 they released “What’s Up?” A song that would end up being their only major hit. I love this song, it reminds me of my sister because it’s our go to karaoke song.

8. Veruca Salt

This rock band is from Chicago and was formed in 1992. Throughout the 90s they toured with Hole, another notable female fronted band, and Bush.

9. The Breeders

The Breeders formed in 1986 by Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly. The band has seen members change through out the years, the only continuous  member has been founder Kim Deal. Add The Breeders to your playlist if you’re looking for something to pump you up!
