To My College Best Friend at the End of Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

Hey Best Friend,

People always said I would meet my lifelong friends in college, but I didn’t expect that friend would be you. I’m not saying you’re not great because you are. I just always assumed that I would become best friends with my roommates, teammates, or that I would have to join a sorority to make the lifelong connections people always talked about. I didn’t expect my first conversation with my college BFF to be about getting kicked out of our first day of lab for wearing flip-flops…but here we are.

We took our time becoming friends, slowly bonding over our shared major and love for Mexican food. We rarely hung out unless it was after class to get a bite to eat or go over our lab reports. It’s crazy how close we got and that neither of us remember exactly how that happened, but I’m glad it did.

I’m glad I have a friend as amazing as you. I’m thankful I always have someone to turn to, and laugh with. I’m thankful for our countless selfies and Disney movie nights when we’re supposed to be studying. I’m thankful you introduced me to your friends, and that they eventually became my friends too.

Without you college would be so much different. I wouldn’t have a friend to call “mom” and go home with on weekends because my home is too far away. Without you I’d be bored more often and make more bad decisions than I already do. Without you I wouldn’t know how to ride a horse…and I’d probably still be a little afraid of them, too.

Thanks for not being what I imagined my college best friend to be, and thanks for being so much more.

Freshman year is almost over, but I can’t wait to see what the next three years have in store.

“Love you. Bye.”

I am a pre-vet major who loves to laugh (especially at myself), drink coffee, and spend time with my dog, Cora. I moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee to attend college at UTM and compete for their division 1 rifle team.
