Madelyn Jackson '12 - The newest Knoxville FellowBy April 8, 2012 - 12:30am Madelyn Jackson is preparing to graduate college with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Psychology. But unlike students who are headed into grad school or straight to the job world, Madelyn is taking a unique gap year. As one of 12 students chosen for the Knoxville Fellows Initiative Program, Madelyn will spend August through May living in Market Square, working an internship, and learning about and practicing how to develop herself as a Christian. She’s focused on setting a good example in the community while growing personally. Courtney Fritts - Challenging for ImprovementBy March 31, 2012 - 2:05pm Courtney Fritts, 19, decided to go the extra mile to help better herself as a student and as a person this semester when she opted to participate in what is known as the Kingdom Experiment with her church youth group. This experiment requires you to complete weekly challenges that are supposed to teach you important life lessons. An experiment varies from person to person, but the common component is that you have to give up something or do something that teaches you a lesson. For example, to learn patience you have to spend a week without passing any cars. READ MORE |

Artist Profile – Allison OlmsteadBy March 18, 2012 - 9:45pm I once watched Allison Olmstead take scraps of black construction paper, draw what looked like to me random hieroglyphs on them, then cut them out and fold them into a sphere. I stood on a chair across the room, struggling to draw a Pikachu on a giant piece of yellow paper. Before I could even accidentally slice half the tail of my Pikachu off and curse loudly, she had what was basically a paper lantern hanging up in the middle of our cramped room in Hess Hall. She laughs and glances across the room where an orange, overweight (or maybe just big boned, no one is sure) cat with one ear basks in the sunlight. “Evander,” she calls, “I’m not satisfied with my cat pictures!” She grabs her Polaroid, which looks more like a giant blue children’s toy than a camera, and creeps over to the window.
