How to Deal: Surviving long car rides all by your lonesome

By Rachel Finney

I think I speak for almost everyone when I say that I am super pumped to be going home for the holidays. After what seems like a lifetime of exams and last minute papers, I am finally ready to surrender myself to a month’s time of home cooking, sleeping in, and, most importantly, no more classes. Unfortunately, I have to endure a seven hour car ride alone in order to make it home to Collierville, Tennessee (which, for those of you who have no idea where that is, is right outside of Memphis). To say hours and hours of driving with just the road and myself can get a little lonesome is a bit of an understatement. So here are a few tips in order to keep you from passing out at the wheel or going crazy:...

How to Deal: Writer's Block

By Kathryn Sullivan
November 12, 2011 - 4:26pm

The end of the semester is near! And while thoughts of Thanksgiving and Christmas break are distracting and exciting, there are still some final assignments to be done. One item in particular is popular among professors before exams: essays. Weekly quizzes, assigned readings, and discussion questions are at a close, but there are still the final papers to crank out. As a journalism student, I have spent 90 percent of my college career writing. As a side effect, I am all too familiar with writer’s block. So here are some tips to battle the pesky mind block and finish the final papers looming between you and winter freedom. READ MORE

How to Deal: Fighting with an Ex

By Kathryn Sullivan
November 5, 2011 - 7:46pm

When a relationship ends, that’s the end of anniversaries, surprise gifts, goodnight kisses, etc. But it’s also supposed to be the end of fights with your ex, right? Sometimes we’re just not that lucky.

No matter how long you’ve been broken up, fighting with an ex is different than fighting with just anyone. Hopefully the arguing stops when the relationship does, but collegiettes™ have to be prepared if that’s not the case.

1. Judge if it’s worth getting mad.

So once again I am talking about being a broke college student, probably because I am one…. Most girls want to strut their stuff with a cute looking costume for Halloween. However, when the time comes to buy a costume, everything seems ridiculously expensive. Many costumes range from 40-80 dollars, and don’t have much more coverage than a swimsuit. Well I’m going to tell you about an easy way to find a cheap costume that can still be cute enough to walk the streets of Knoxville in. READ MORE

How to Deal: The End of Jersey Shore Season 4

By Rachel Finney
October 22, 2011 - 3:57pm

In the style of Pauly D, “Awww yeah, sadness YEAH!” To say I am disappointed that this season of Jersey Shore has come to a close would be an understatement. My roommates and I celebrate each Thursday/Jersday as being Family Night, a night where each roommate makes a different cuisine each week and then we rest our full tummies by watching Jersey Shore.

How to Deal: Lack of sleep

By Kathryn Sullivan
October 15, 2011 - 8:09pm

Collegiettes™ are no secret to lack of sleep. Whether we're out all night partying, up all night studying, or just not accustomed to waking up for 8 a.m.'s, we frequently attend class tired. Some days you can make it through class with heavy eyelids and a sleeping brain, but how do you wake yourself up on the important days?

I'm the worst about getting enough sleep. It's really become an annoyance now that I have an early class. Some mornings I really struggle to keep my eyes open... much less pay attention to what we're actually talking about. So I did a little research to find some tips on waking up. READ MORE

How to Deal: Staying Stylish on a College Budget

By Bailey Hudson
October 8, 2011 - 6:55pm

Over fall break, I took a trip to my local mall. I was looking forward to seeing all the new fall and winter styles and hoping to buy a few things to add to my wardrobe. But, every time I found something that I liked it was way too expensive. This got me thinking… Most girls in college are on some sort of budget where they do not have the option of buying the newest, most expensive clothes out there. Well, I am here to tell you how you can still be stylish without spending too much money.

How to Deal: Midterm Stress

By Kathryn Sullivan
October 4, 2011 - 4:28pm

I spent a wonderfully relaxing four days in Abingdon, VA for a little fall break getaway. I had a nice hotel room with a good friend, attended a beautiful wedding, and got to welcome in fall with a great drive. A refreshing few days away from the stresses of school was just what I needed. It wasn’t until I was sitting at work Sunday night that I remembered… I have midterms this week!

My iPhone confirmed my worries. There it was, right on the syllabi I’ve had all semester: Medieval Civilization midterm Tuesday, Political Science midterm Wednesday. That would have been the time to panic, but I had no time for panicing.
