SoMo LIVE in Salt Lake City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

SoMo is quick to become one of the biggest selling artists, after his release of the hit single, Ride, went Platinum, we knew this heartthrob Texan would surely soon become our number one crush-worthy celebrity. Catch him playing October 7th in Salt Lake City at In The Venue. Her Campus got all of the details from SoMo!

Her Campus Utah: You’ve been touring for about a year now, what are you looking forward to most about coming to Utah?

SoMo: I drove through Utah and it is just beautiful, all the mountains. I’m just excited to be around people and get out, I’ve been locked in the studio finishing some awesome stuff up and I haven’t really been out in public.

Her Campus Utah: You need some outside air! Your new single came out September 4, give our readers an inside peek, what is your take on the theme of the song, what is the song about?

SoMo: It is definitely sexy, I think I’ve gotten it across that SoMo likes to be sensual and sexy! It is a comeback song, it’s called Hide and Freak featuring Trey Songz we did a show together last year and he’s a cool dude. I wrote the track, sent him the track and he really liked it and wrote his part. It’s going to be awesome.

Her Campus Utah: What was it like collaborating with Trey Songz?

SoMo: We actually did it all remotely besides the night we met for the show, I haven’t seen him, he’s out doing his thing and I’m out doing mine. Luckily, we live in this day and age where artists and producers and songwriters can all still work together remotely, simply being able to email a song is crazy.

Her Campus Utah: You’ve been collaborating with a ton of other artists in addition to Trey Songz! Who has inspired you?

SoMo: Everyone is inspiring but when it comes to someone who is super down-to-Earth, Ty Dolla $ign is featured on the remix of Ride and he is just a positive person and I just like positive person! But everyone in the industry is cooler than you’d think once you are behind closed doors.

Her Campus Utah: You’ve been in the studio as well as touring, what has been the most challenging part of balancing out both sides?

SoMo: Oh man, it’s hard, being a performing artist and a recording artist and a writer, it’s hard, you have to be willing to not go out on a Friday night or a Saturday night or club goin’ up on a Tuesday night, you just don’t, if you want to be able to have time to make the music and then tour, you have to focus and do it. I really love what I do so I feel like when I’m touring, that’s my break and being in the world and live and then I lock myself in the studio. It works out, it’s a good balance.

Her Campus Utah: It’s challenging but it seems like you’ve made ways work for you.

SoMo: Definitely! You just have to get used to the routine, it’s totally different than having a 9-5, because I could be up all night and then have to work the next day and it doesn’t matter because the next day there is still work to be done.

Her Campus Utah: What was your feeling when it was certified Platinum?

SoMo: It was super exciting! It’s awesome, the day I put Ride out, I was sitting there with my producer and I was like “Man, if this song doesn’t go Platinum, I’m just going to put it on every album for the rest of my life and put it out independently forever until it goes Platinum! I really believe in the power of speaking stuff into existence, more so because it helps you believe in yourself and helps you get things done.

Her Campus Utah: Speaking of “speaking things into existence,” what is your biggest goal with music, if you could have any dream in that industry come true, what would you wish for?

SoMo: Honesty, I want to have credibility as a songwriter and to be able to have longevity, everyone wants something now but I want the respect that comes with time and being able to do this forever, I’m not here to have a couple hits and be in the shadows, I’m here to make music forever, I want to make music for the rest of my life.

Her Campus Utah: Our readers love “SoMo Sunday’s,” what was your favorite song that you have done with it?

SoMo: That’s hard to pick! I listened to a bunch because I just got done making the tour set, and honestly, I really love Love Song by Rihanna, I can listen to that and jam.

Her Campus Utah: Anything else you’d like to say to our readers?

SoMo: Thank you to the fans! I couldn’t do it without you and I always say less stress and more love.
