Sisters First by Blood, Now by Bond

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Like many college women, when I received my bid to my sorority, I fell in love with the sisterhood and with the Greek Community in general.  A couple months in, I knew Greek Life was something that I wanted for my sisters and I started bugging them about needing to go through recruitment when they were freshmen the next year.  Finally, this fall they both (yes, I have twin sisters) went through recruitment.  Luckily for me, both their Universities had Alpha Chi Omega chapters and throughout the whole experience I was crossing my fingers that they would fall in love with Alpha Chi.

Like most things in life, it didn’t work out perfectly and I had one sister who found her home in Gamma Phi Beta but, luckily, the other one fell in love with Alpha Chi Omega!  I was so excited that they both found their individual homes, but it hit a special place in my heart watching my sister go through recruitment knowing that Alpha Chi was her #1. When bid day finally arrived and my sister, Sara ran home to Alpha Chi, she was probably the new member I was most excited for, despite her not being in my chapter.

Within the next couple of days, I had all of my current sisters in my home chapter add her on Facebook, I got to send her a t-shirt and I get to go through the whole new member period virtually by her side.  It reminds me of my new member period and it has been renewed my sense of loyalty to my sisters, reminding me what brings us together. For my sister and I, it has made us automatically closer, despite her being farther away than ever.  It has truly shown me the power of sisterhood and how despite being very close already, sharing the bond of a sorority makes you even closer over night.

Looking to the future makes me so excited to have this bond; to try and pass it on to our kids and continue the legacy. I cannot wait for the family vacations where we both get to throw what we know together.  For the hand-me-down t-shirts I get to give her when I graduate.  Showing each other our houses when one comes to visit and hopefully attending her initiation this fall.

Having my sister join Alpha Chi Omega and sharing that bond has been one of the best experiences I’ve had during my college experience and I’m so excited to watch her grow throughout the years just like I have.
