Napsugar Hegedus: Director of The Vagina Monologues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Napsugar Hegedus is well deserving of the Campus Celebrity title! She is the Director of The Vagina Monologues that can be seen here at the U on February 20th-22nd. Napsugar is from Las Vegas, Nevada, majoring in Theatre Arts and the Actor Training Program, and taking the U of U campus by storm! We at Her Campus Utah were so excited to get a chance to talk to her about being a Director, and where her amazing and unique name comes from!

Her Campus (HC):  We have to ask. Your name is so unique and awesome, is it your given name?

Napsugar Hegedus (NH):  Thank you! Yes, I could not have come up with it by myself.

HC:  Is there a story about it?

NH:  Napsugár means sunshine in Hungarian. So my name is Sunshine. My mother used to nanny for a woman named Révész Napsugár when she was younger. Napsugár influenced my mother to become the talented artist she is today, and that is how I got my name.

HC:  You are the director for “The Vagina Monologues” on campus at the U, is this your first show as director?

NH:  It is!  And it being my first time directing, I am so anxious and ready to put the show on its feet. We are ready to play!

HC:  What can we expect from “The Vagina Monologues”?

NH:  You can expect it all! The Vagina Monologues holds a special place in theatre history; as stories that either change your life, or you simply don’t care for. I believe that our cast has brought a fresh perspective and new life to the Monologues. We have been in deep discussion, we have dissected, we have discovered and now we are ready to share these stories with the community.

HC:  You had a Kickstarter program to help fund the show, were you surprised at how successful it was or were you expecting a lot of support?

NH:  I was absolutely surprised! I couldn’t believe that we were able to raise so much money in so little time. I cannot thank our donors enough for taking the time to send us a little love, as well as continuing to share our event.

HC:  This show is such great timing with the It’s On Us campaign on campus, was that planned or just a happy coincidence?

NH:  Totally a coincidence, but maybe the best accident that I have ever been a part of! I am so thrilled that The Vagina Monologues is part of the global campaign 1 Billion Rising to end violence towards women and girls around the world. In conjunction with the ASUU campaign, Its On Us, the campus will be buzzing! We will be rising to end campus assaults, domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape and FGM! We will be rising for sexual healing! We will be rising for those who don’t feel like they have a voice! Here at the University of Utah, here in Salt Lake City we can and will be the difference that we see and feel in our communities.

HC:  This is so powerful! When and where can students see the show?

NH:  Performances will be on February 20, 21, 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the UMFA Auditorium located on the U of U campus. Doors open at 6:30. Be early! Come and talk to us! We want to meet everyone!

HC:  How much are tickets?

NH:  $5.00 minimum, which is a donation to the Women’s Resource Center. If any patrons feel like they would like to contribute more, there will be tax forms available at each performance, as this is a donation to a non- profit organization and the donation is tax deductible.
