How to De-Stress Before Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

With everybody else already celebrating the Holiday Season, we college students know that this is NOT the time for fun and games. Not yet anyway. With the snow and cold comes the dreaded finals week. The people you see on campus are in sweatpants, looking tired and like they are about to die; but of course they still have seven hours of studying left to do. Finals are a stressful time for everyone, but stress isn’t healthy and definitely isn’t going to help you ace your Bio Chem final. Before you accientally kill yourself with Red Bull and Coffee, here are some tips to de-stress before all of your finals start.

1. Tea, please

The next time you reach for that 6th cup of coffee, grab a cup of tea instead. Tea is good for you and will give you the boost you need to get that final project done. When it comes to tea, you can’t go wrong with what kind you choose. Find a kind you like and enjoy the cup of warm goodness.

2. Light your fav candle

Lighting a candle with a scent you love can help you de-stress immediately. Next time you are studying, light a candle to see if it helps you de-stress and focus on the task at hand. Bath and Body Works even has an entire line of stress relief products that are perfect for finals week. Find all of their stress relief products Here online.

3. Don’t fill your body with junk food (even though that’s all that sounds good RN)

Try, try, try to eat healthy food around finals week. Eating burritos and chocolate might make you feel good in the moment but you will 100% regret it later. Eating healthy foods will give you the energy you need to get through those long days at the library. Just do it, even though it’s harder than getting fast food you’ll be happy you did it in the long run.

4. Take a hot bath or shower

After a long day of studying the thing that will make you feel the most relaxed is a long bath or shower. I know that in college not everyone has a bath tub they can go running home to, so jump in the shower and wash all of your worries away. If you do have a bath, grab a bath bomb from LUSH and get ready for prettiest bath of your life.

5. Exercise

You may think it’s impossible to find time for exercise during finals week, but can definitely squeeze in time for it. Exercising will make you feel more awake, energized and clear your head. Hit the gym with some flashcards and you can even get some studying in while staying healthy.

6. Make sure you get enough sleep

This one is pretty impossible… but if you put your mind to it, it can be done. Staying at the library until 2am then going home and studying some more may be your typical night during finals week, BUT MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP. Getting eight hours is the suggest time you sleep normal nights, so during finals week try to get at least six. If you do this you will retain more information when you study and perform better on your tests.

The less stress you put on yourself about finals the better you will feel about studying for your upcoming tests. If you go into it with the mindset that however you do on the test determines how smart you are, then you wont accomplish anything. Try not to stress too much about it. Go into it with the mindset that you’ve done you’re best, you’ve studied the most you can, and whatever happens happens. Get a candle, take a bath with some tea and relax so you stay sane in this crazy stressful time.
