Her Beauty Tip: How to Clean Makeup Brushes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

When is the last time you washed your makeup brushes? If it has been over a week, you could be doing more harm then good when applying your makeup. Bacteria builds up in your makeup brushes after multiple uses, which could be the cause of your breakouts and other skin issues. If your makeup brushes need a good cleaning, and you aren’t sure how to do it, keep reading!

What you will need:

  • Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
  • Water
  • Small bowl
  • Dry towel

Step 1:

Take the baby shampoo and pour a small amount into a bowl. Add a splash of water to create a soapy mixture.

Step 2:

Swirl one brush at a time into the mixture. Once you feel that all of the bristles have been submerged, rinse the brush out under running lukewarm water. This step may be repeated if your brushes are still dirty after rinsing. Make sure to keep the bristles facing downward and avoid getting the metal part of the brush wet. This will increase the longevity of your brushes and prevent them from shedding.

Step 3:

Squeeze the extra moisture out of your brushes and mold the bristles back to their normal shape. Next, fold the edge of your towel a few times to create a slope. Set each one of your brushes on the towel with their bristles facing down the slope. This trick will help any excess water drain from the brushes and prevent the glue holding the brushes together from loosening.

And that’s it! How to clean your makeup brushes in three easy steps! It only takes a few minutes and will keep your brushes clean, and germ free!
