Five ways to give back this season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Ladies, this time of year, the spirit of giving surrounds us. It is an important time to be thankful for what you have and help out someone in need if you can. Many groups on campus and in the community are creating holiday service projects in which you can participate, you can create your own initiative or you can donate or volunteer with one of the projects below. An easy and inexpensive (it may only cost you your time!) act of service can make someone’s entire year! It’s a great time to do what you can to give back.

  1. You can donate food and non-perishable items to the Unrivaled Rivalry Food Drive on campus. There are two large cans outside the east entrance of the Marriot Library, as well as in the Union and Alumni House. All you have to do is pick up a few cans and drop them off.
  2. You can help out at a Utah Food Bank. You can find a location here. All you need to do is call and arrange for a time to volunteer for a few hours. You could be doing anything from accepting donations to sorting food to helping pass out various groceries.

  3. Crossroads Urban Center is a local thrift store and food pantry that is always in need of extra volunteers or donations. You can contribute food, clothing and other household items. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays they have volunteers assist in their food pantry from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. You can find more information about Crossroads here.
  4. At any local Dollar Tree store, you can purchase a toy for a child of a military family in need. For only $1.00, the cashier will add an extra item onto your transaction, and the store will take care of selecting the items and shipping them to the families.  You can find out more about Operation Homefront here.
  5. You can give any used athletic shoes to “Shoes for Haiti” hosted by Real Salt Lake and KUTV2. All you have to do is drop off any old pairs at The RSL Team Store at Rio Tinto Stadium or KUTV2 News Studio. The sponsors will take care of the rest! If you have questions, contact John at 801-918-5050 or Stephanie at 801-839-1234.
Jetta is a fun and spunky communication student at the University of Utah. She has a lot of energy and an outgoing personality- perfect for her work in service coordination, peer advising, the Department of Communication, Express, and of course HerCampus! Jetta loves social media, writing, and learning new promotion and advertising skills. She does not currently drive a Jetta, but hopefully she can afford one upon completion of her degree!
