Eating Healthy at Your Favorite On-Campus Food Destinations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Alright, so we all know what it’s like when we say we’re “eating healthy”. We cut out all the carbs, say no to cream and sugar in our morning drinks, take a vow that we’ll strictly stick to fruits and vegetables, and then a few days later we crash, burn, and retreat back into the warm comfort only a Starbucks scone can bring. We feel the guilt, shame, and then end up repeating the same cycle all over again. We’ve all been there! But it does not have to be that way AT ALL! The best way to break this self-destructive habit is to find the healthy and delicious eats on campus while still visiting your typical go-to food destinations! Compiled below is a list of the healthiest options on campus at 5 of the most popular food destinations:

1. Chop’d Salads

Located in the Union, Chop’d capitalizes in nutritious and delicious. You will not find a more fresh and delectable salad anywhere on campus! With selections such as the Asian Chicken Salad, BBQ Chicken Salad, and an option to create your own, you can’t go wrong! The salads can be a full and filling meal if you add some chicken to them, or they can be a simple snack inbetween classes. The bonus? They’re cheap! Less than $5 for a half-salad!

2. Freshens Cafe

Freshens Cafe is THE place to get your sweet and savory fix. The great part is that its right inside the Student Life Center! With smoothies, crepes, rice bowls, and salads, Freshens is a perfect campus destination for a post-workout snack, healthy breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

3. Jamba Juice

While you need to be careful about which selections you make at Jamba Juice while trying to eat healthy, there are several great options for maintaining your good habits. Jamba prepares hot oatmeal with your selection of toppings such as honey and almonds. They also have strawberry and banana protein shakes, whole food smoothies, and almond milk smoothies to help boost your energy at any time of the day!

4. Einstein’s Bros. Bagels

At Einstein’s there are several healthy options to replace the thick shmear on a toasted bagel. Einstein’s even has its own healthy or “thintastic” menu! Most of the options are under 400 calories and have turkey-sausage, egg whites, asparagus, mushrooms, and other healthy and nutrient filled items to replace that cream cheese. Einstein’s also has wheat tortillas for you to create your own personalized egg-white wrap! Also, if you’re looking for a great post-workout snack, go for the power-protein bagel with a 25% reduced fat shmear i.e. honey almond, or plain, to help build muscle and make the most of your work-out!

5. Starbucks

At Starbucks, try substituting the morning pastry for the spinach feta wrap! With egg whites, feta cheese, tomatoes, and spinach, this wrap is still healthy and satisfying. Another great morning option is the fresh, hot oatmeal they offer! Drink-wise, you can still enjoy your favorite drinks but use soy or almond milk as substitutes for regular milk. Also, go for the non-fat option. Their teas, tea freshers, and green tea frappuccino are also great picks if you’re trying to cut back on the calories!

There you have it! The healthy alternatives for campus dining! Just remember, the pain of discipline is better than the pain of regret! Good luck with your healthy lifestyle goals!
