The American Girl Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

This is what I listen to when I’m feeling young, wild, free, and proud!  Blast this playlist in the car, or while getting ready by yourself or with your girls to remember that you’ll never be as young as you are now.  So, you better have fun!

“American Girl” – Bonnie McKee

The song for which this playlist is named!  I like it mostly for the first line, “I fell in love in a 7-Eleven parking lot,” because it reminds me of soo many nights of walking to the gas station, trading sparks and wit with someone that makes my heart flutter.  Now, if there were only a song to romanticize late night Beto’s burrito-flavored first kisses…

“If You Can Afford Me” – Katy Perry

If I could, I’d put KP’s entire new PRISM album on this playlist, but instead I’ll just throw it back to the album that brought us “I Kissed a Girl”, because this song has such an American flavor. Don’t think for one second though that it’s about being truly materialistic. It’s about not playing “cheap with your heart.”

“How To Be A Heartbreaker” – Marina and The Diamonds

I don’t think there is more salient advice in any of these songs than, “Boys, they like the look of danger.”  This song will make you feel powerful and dangerous in a good way.

“Naked Kids” – Grouplove

This song makes me think of skinny dipping, which then makes me think of moments of liberation, vulnerability and perfect water.  It is reminiscent of pure bliss and being at ease with yourself while throwing off any cares, along with your clothes. “Relax and stay fun” and don’t get caught.

“Free” & “Daddy’s Girl” – Natalia Kills

I’m sorry, I tried to pick just one of these Natalia Kills songs, but I just couldn’t.  They both equally deserve be on this playlist.  “Free” is basically my life anthem as it echoes my thoughts in lines like, “I just spent all my money but I’m gonna rock it like it don’t cost a thing.”  “Daddy’s Girl” tricks you in the beginning but quickly changes into something fresh and buoyant with a deliciously melancholy spritz.

“Chocolate” – The 1975

I don’t know what this song is about, but it talks about chocolate and being “dressed in black, head to toe.”  It gets me moving! What’s more American (hipster) girl than that?

“Too Fake” – Hockey

How many times has an almost relationship ended with you thinking, “I’ve got too much soul for you. I don’t like it but it’s true.”  The best American girls are impetuous, tender, and soulful and you shouldn’t have to say sorry for that.

“Hey Brother” – Avicii

“There’s an endless road to rediscover” with your sisters by your side.  These strangely, eerie lyrics mixed with a good dance beat make for the perfect backdrop to a spontaneous adventure.  Revel in the paradox and sing this song loud.

“Pull Me Down” – Mikky Ekko

Maybe it’s just me, but I think this song is incredibly sensual.  It makes me feel sexy and ready to take on the world!  This is also a really good song for flirting with that guy in the happy hour sushi place or maybe just your boyfriend.  Either way, there’s going to be a little trouble and “you know what they say about trouble.”
