5 Trends from the 90’s We SHOULD Try To Bring Back in 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

New Year Same “90’s Throwback”?… 2017 brought back many 90’s styles back from the “fashion dead,” some we enthusiastically appreciated… and some should have stayed right in the past. However, sometimes we forget that the 90’s also brought other creations that we not only long for nostalgically, but were also just plain awesome, and should have never left. Here are five things this writer thinks we should let make a comeback!

1. The Infamous Slang– With the arise of phrases such as “I’m shook”, “woke” and “loml” it’s important that we don’t forget where we college students learned how to create our own type of slang. These throwback phrases include “I gotta dip”, “this outfit is so phat!”, “oh snap!” and “BOO-YAH!” (Although maybe this last one should be left right in the 90’s)

2. The Snacks– Nostalgia lies in the kitchen, am I right? As 90’s babies, we enjoyed some pretty awesome and memorable snacks that nothing in our local Smith’s now could replace. A few of these items include Gushers, Fruit by Foot rollups, Nerd Ropes (didn’t we all feel awesome when eating one of those?), the Minute Maid Juice Bars, TRIX yogurt cups, and, of course, the ever famous Dunkaroos. Let’s be real, if your parent put these in your lunchbox, you just knew the rest of your day would be great!

3. The Beats- This one I will admit, our generation has been pretty good at bringing back. But while appreciating the styles from 90’s artists like Britney Spears and NSYNC, let’s not forget other 90’s artists and bands that revolutionized the era—Nirvana, Green Day, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson and much, much more! Let’s all expand on our 90’s music horizon! It was a good time for it!

4. Television/Film– Similarly to music, the 90’s was a great time for both TV and film with classic shows introducing revolutionary types of cinema. Friends and Clueless are among many great examples but who could forget childhood movie classics such as Home Alone, The Nightmare Before Christmas, the introduction of chick flicks like 10 Things I Hate About You and more! Similarly, 90’s TV included award winning shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved by the Bell, Full House, That 70’s show, All That and the forever beloved Rugrats. Maybe 2018 is the year we can petition for these to be on Netflix!  5. Games/Technology- From boardgames like Candyland and Clue to Super Mario 64 that you just HAD to have, mom/dad, with the new Nintendo DS, the 90’s didn’t lack in providing our childhood fun. Christmas and birthdays included begging for those cool new VideoNow that you could use to actually watch TV shows (once you bought all 10 of the disks) and then spending long hours playing another round of Clue or Mouse Trap because mom and/or dad didn’t give in to buying it right away.

There you have it 90’s kids! Five  trends totally worth bringing back from our beloved generation that aren’t just from fashion! With all the stress collegiates will undoubtedly experience with the New Year, perhaps a few of these throwbacks can help us revert to a simpler time, even if just for a moment. Good luck this semester!
