Our Top 5 New Shows to Check Out this Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

1. A to Z (NBC)

The series will follow the lives of Andrew (Ben Feldman, from Mad Men), an internet dating site employee seeking the girl of his dreams, and Zelda (Cristin Milioti, from How I Met Your Mother), a lawyer who works in the building adjacent to him. By an accidental chance of fate, Zelda meets Andrew to resolve a mismatch dating dispute and these two single people suddenly find themselves falling for each other.

It seems charming; like a romcom for TV. It could be your favorite show this semesteror it could make good background noise for those late night study sessions.

The series premiere is scheduled for Thursday October 2, 2014 at 9:30 p.m.

2. Selfie (ABC)

Loosely based on My Fair Lady, the series will follow the life of Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillian, of Doctor Who), a woman obsessed with becoming famous through the use of social media, until she realizes that she needs to actually friends instead of “friending” people online. Eliza hires Henry Higenbottam (John Cho, of Star Trek), a marketing self-image guru who takes on the task of re-branding Eliza’s image in hopes of showing her that there is more to life out there than social media and apps.

From the trailers online it seems like it is going to be our new favorite comedy. The wit is quick and there are plenty of laughs to be had. Definitely worth checking out!

The series will air on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. It is set to premiere September 30, 2014.

3. black-ish (ABC)

The Hollywood Reporter described the show as an “upper-middle class black man who struggles to raise his children with a sense of cultural identity despite constant contradictions and obstacles coming from his liberal wife, old-school father and his own assimilated, color-blind kids.” Starring Anthony Anderson (from the Scary Movie franchise), Laurence Fishburne (from the Matrix), along with several lesser known talents.

The trailer had me laughing and I really can’t wait to see this one in action. I think it’s a really strong idea and it has a lot of potential.

The series is scheduled to air on Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m., starting September 24, 2014.

4. Red Band Society (FOX)

Red Band Society takes a new approach to the typical medical drama by following kids living in the pediatrics wing of Los Angeles’ Ocean Park Hospital. From cancer to mental disorders, every patients suffers from their own sickness that forces them to keep residence in the facility, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the angst of being a young adult. The patients do everything they can to make their medically confined lives interesting, often to the annoyance of the hospital staff. Featuring Octavia Spencer, from the Help, as well as a lot of up and coming young stars.

Think The Fault in Our Stars meets It’s Kind of a Funny Story with a little bit of Skins. This is sure to be a big hit. It is this fall’s underdog series; it is going to be something you don’t want to miss.

The series is premiering Wednesday September 17, 2014 at 9 pm.

5. Happyland (MTV)

Happyland’s main character Lucy (Bianca Santos of The Fosters) is a cynical employee and daughter to the park’s perfect princess Elena. Desperate to escape the park’s brand of manufactured happiness, Lucy rethinks her desire to flee after the arrival of a new staff member—the son (Shane Harper, of Awkward) of Happyland’s new owner—who brings a scandalous secret with him.

As all MTV dramedies, it is sure to gather a following and will either be a hit or a miss with the critics. We will just have to wait and find out on this one.

It premieres Tuesday, September 30 at 11/10c.
