My Hulu Recommendations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

I’m in that transitional phase in my life where I no longer have Netflix. I didn’t see it being humanly possible, but I have watched everything there is to watch that is of interest to me. Because of this momentous occasion, I decided to move onto the second best option, Hulu.

If your taste in television shows are similar to mine, this list will be essential for you. Plus, the timing of it is perfect. Hulu and Spotify have teamed up to offer students a packaged deal. For just $4.99 a month, you are able to purchase Spotify Premium as well as stream Hulu with limited commercials. Before you run to take advantage of the deal, enjoy my list of top 6 shows to watch! (For now at least)

  1. The Mindy Project

I am obsessed with this show! For one, I love everything about a strong, hilariously independent woman of color as the lead. Each episode runs about 23 minutes, but within that time you follow Mindy Lahiri, a witty OBGYN in New York City, as she navigates being a successful single woman. Mindy Kaling is a writer for the show, and also plays the main character, and I love every second of it. Unfortunately, the final season is currently streaming. Thank God every episode is available to watch forever.

2. Project Runway

For those days where I like to pretend that I am a talented fashion designer that can make intricate designs out of the most outlandish fabrics, I turn to this show. I have always dreamed of being a fashion designer, so this is a show where I can somewhat live out my dreams. If you have never seen Project Runway, it is essentially a competition show where undiscovered fashion designers compete in various challenges. By the end of the competition, the finalists get to show their collections during New York Fashion Week for a multitude of prizes.

3. Chicago P.D.

My biggest issue with Hulu is one that I almost deleted my account over. I initially got Hulu so that I could watch Chicago P.D. from the beginning; however, I realized that Hulu and Netflix are quite different when it comes to binge watching. Some shows on Hulu you are only able to watch from the current season that is being aired on TV. As you could guess, that was the problem I ran into with trying to stream Chicago P.D. After being left to my own devices and having to watch a different way, I was FINALLY able to watch what was available to watch on Hulu. But back to the premise of the show. Chicago P.D. is about a police department in Chicago where in each episode you follow the cast as they try their best to protect the streets of Chicago, but sometimes not in the most conventional of ways. This show is intense, fast paced, dramatic, and just about everything you could want in a crime show. Plus, STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS.

4. Younger

I actually just started watching Younger within the last few days, but it’s a show that I have been meaning to watch, and Hulu has it ready to stream. I love shows that center around a profession that I one day dream to be in. Younger is about a woman who is in a low part of her life. Her husband just divorced her; she’s been out of work raising her now teenage daughter who is studying in India and is in desperate need of work. Unfortunately in the fast paced field of publishing, age matters, and Liza has a slight disadvantage…she’s 40-something. To beat the system she pretends to be “younger” to get back to the field she loves. If that didn’t persuade you, Hilary Duff is a main character.

5. Real Housewives (any, and all of the franchises)

I personally am a Bravo TV fiend, which means I pretty much have seen all the episodes as they air on cable, but I still love to rewatch the episodes. There is something so fun about watching the lives of rich people living a life you dream of. If you like reality television, give the Real Housewives a try. My favorite is the Real Housewives of New York City, but if you don’t care for that one pick another city- Beverly Hills, Orange County, Atlanta, Dallas, you name it, and you’re welcome.

6. Nashville

Full disclosure, I have never watched this show, so it’s one I’m recommending to you, and one I’ve been recommended. I tend to be drawn to television shows that have actors in them that I like, and I have always been a fan of Hayden Panettiere. Nashville is a drama focusing on an aging country artist and one who is up and coming. If you are someone who likes drama and country music, I might have found your new favorite show.

I’m on the newer side of Hulu, so as I fall down the rabbit hole of television, I’ll update everyone on my newest additions.

By the way, have you heard Netflix is getting rid of One Tree Hill?? Perfect time to transition to Hulu!

HCXOXO,

Imani Taylor
