20 Movies You Have to Watch At Least Once in Your Life!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

I absolutely love watching movies (some may same I’m a movieholic), and I especially love watching the great, classic, timeless films that every generation will continue to watch and love throughout the years. Last year I started a list of my favorite movies of all time and I thought I would share with you 20 of those movies and I highly suggest that you watch all of them at least once in your life. With Thanksgiving and Christmas break coming up very shortly, you’ll have the perfect excuse to sit back, hang with family and friends, and watch a few classic movies.

  1.  Bridget Jones’s Diary

This movie is definitely one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Bridget Jones (played by the amazingly talented Renée Zellweger) is a quirky, accident prone goofball that every girl can relate to. In this movie, you get to watch Bridget struggle (in a hilarious way) to find love and decide between two devilishly handsome English men, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. I love this movie so much because Bridget Jones isn’t the super skinny, super beautiful girl usually portrayed in movies; she has her flaws but that’s what makes these two men and the rest of the world love her.

     2.  Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is also one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. This movie just warms your heart. Baby (played by Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (played by Patrick Swayze) meet and fall in love in such a dreamy way: through dancing. There are some iconic moments in this movie like “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” and the classic moment when Swayze picks up Grey and holds her in the air while she arches her back and has her hands reaching towards the sky.

   3. American Hustle

If you’re into period pieces (term used for movies that take place in other time periods, like the 70s or 80s) that involve lots of drama and deal with money and cops, than you’ll love American Hustle! Plus, the cast in this movie in phenomenal: Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Robert De Niro.

  4. When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally is one of, if not the most classic romance movie of all times. It shows Harry and Sally’s, two friends, struggle to find love with other people throughout the years. Do Harry and Sally find other soulmates or are these friends each other’s soulmates? Watch to find out!

  5. When a Man Loves a Woman

This movie is definitely underrated. I think this is such a beautiful, romantic story of a husband and a wife who get through the wife’s struggle with alcohol. Meg Ryan and Adam Garcia play the leads in this movie, and they have amazing chemistry.

  6. Never Been Kissed

This is another one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Very similar to Bridget Jones, Josie Geller (played by the super loveable Drew Barrymore) is a quirky, somewhat nerdy girl who was made fun of all throughout high school. Now, she’s a successful journalist who has to go back to high school (undercover) for an article. Will Josie be bullied again or will she finally be cool? Also, this is a romantic comedy, so be ready to cheer on Josie as she finally finds her Mr. Perfect!

  7. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Steven Spielberg is probably my favorite director of all time. His movies are legendary, and E.T. might be my favorite movie of his. E.T. is a classic film that really changed the game for movies in the 80s.

  8. Top Gun

When you think of a classic movie star, Tom Cruise is probably the first person you think of. One of the films that made him the legendary film actor that he is today was Top Gun, so make sure to check it out and enjoy some classic 80s music and an awesome storyline.

  9. Grease

The amount of times I’ve seen this musical film is too embarrassing to tell. This is probably the most iconic musical film of all time (at least in my opinion). John Travolta plays the bad greaser, Danny, and Olivia Newton-John plays good girl, Sandy. Danny and Sandy’s love story still warms my heart, and plus there are some amazing songs in this movie!

  10. Chicago

This musical film came out in 2004, and yet surprisingly I just found out about this film a couple of months ago. Hands down, this is an absolutely, fantastic, super film. The cast, Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Richard Gere, are superb. You will not regret watching this film.

 11. Silver Linings Playbook

I am very much in love with this film. This is one of those movies that transports you into another world and you get so invested into the character’s stories.  David O’ Russel did a beautiful job of portraying what it’s really like to have mental disorders (like anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD, etc.) Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence do such an amazing job, so amazing that Jennifer actually won an Oscar for her performance in this movie. It’s a movie filled with laughs, tears, smiles, and anger. It shows that even the most flawed people still need love.

  12. The Breakfast Club

Even though this is another classic film, I didn’t watch this until a couple months ago. This is such a great film for high school and college students because it’s all about these 5 high schoolers and detention bringing them together to find their voices and place in the world. It’s actually quite a touching and serious movie, so be prepared to shed a tear every once in a while when you watch this movie.

  13. The Devil Wears Prada

For all the fashionistas out there, you will LOVE this movie. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep star in this movie, and it’s all about a girl’s (Hathaway) journey in the fashion world and dealing with her crazy mean boss (Streep). Streep does an absolutely superb job, but that’s not surprisingly since she is Meryl Streep (arguably the best actress of all time).

  14. Good Will Hunting

When I heard about Robin Williams’ death, I was heartbroken. He was my favorite actor of all time; he brought so much joy and he touched the hearts of every one who watched his movie. Good Will Hunting is a perfect example of that, and he was so amazing in it that he ended up getting an Oscar for his role in this film.

  15. Pearl Harbor

This is another underrated movie. I personally think this is one of the best movies ever made. It literally has everything in it: romance, drama, action, etc. This is one of the very few films that made smile cheek to cheek, cry, and be on the edge of my seat, all at the same time.  The cast is superb, the director is superb, and the storyline is superb.

  16. Pride and Prejudice

This is another one of my top 5 favorite movies. For all my fellow hopeless romantics out here, this movie is for you. The love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is so unbelievably beautiful and heartwarming and filled with passion. This is by far my favorite period piece and this movie helped make Keira Knightly the amazingly renowned actress she is today.

  17. Legally Blonde

I noticed I’ve been putting a lot of romantic dramas on this list, so here’s a much lighter and funnier movie: Legally Blonde! This movie is seriously so adorable and such a great chick flick. Not going to lie, playing Elle Woods is kind of a dream of mine, however Reese Witherspoon did a fantastic job and that is why it is such a loved film for society.

  18. Rocky Series

The Rocky series is undoubtedly one of the best movie series of all times. I just recently watched all 6 films, and it honestly changed my life. Rocky’s story is so unbelievably inspiring and you can’t help but get up and root for Rocky when you hear “Gonna Fly Now.” I guarantee you this movie series will go down in history for being one of the most iconic and timeless movies of all time. *By the way, the new movie, Creed, is coming out very soon and it’s the next installment of the Rocky Series- check it out!*

  19. Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2

So I guess you can see I’m more of a romantic movie kind of gal, but I have to say, Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2 are hands down the funniest movies I have ever seen. When I’m with friends and we watch a comedy, I usually laugh because others are there, but when I watch a comedy by myself, I very rarely laugh. This movie is the one exception, which is surprising, because I never thought this movie would be so extremely funny. The script and the actors are FANTASTIC.

  20. Star Wars Series

Not only is this movie series on my top 5 favorite movies, it is my FAVORITE movie/movie series of all time. I am a huge Star Wars fan; I have to have a Star Wars movie marathon at least twice a year, which I will be having very soon since the new Star Wars movie is coming out on December 18th (I’M SO EXCITED). I could go on and on about why this movie is the best movie series of all time, but I’m just going to tell you all to watch it. Trust me. It will be the best decision you’ll ever make.

And that’s it! The 20 movies I highly suggest everyone watches at least once in their life!

Kelli Carmack
