Guide to Christmas Spirit: San Francisco Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

The sad part about the holidays in college is that finals fall smack in the middle of Thanksgiving and Christmas. But, don’t let that bum you out- we live in San Francisco, so holiday spirit can be channeled whenever and wherever you go!

Christmas music is almost like magic at this time of year. In fact, I’m listening to it as I am typing. It is an instant holiday-spirit-spreader. Pop in your headphones and turn up Micheal Buble’s Christmas album whenever you’re walking to class! Don’t forget to stop by the Gleeson Library’s Atrium to see the huge tree on display for the holiday season.

The best part about San Francisco, to me, is the holidays. As a kid, I grew up coming to see the famous Union Square tree every single year. Now that I live here, I have found there is much more to the holiday spirit than just one tree.

Though the classic huge Union Square tree is a must-visit every year, there are plenty of other decorations in the city that are worth checking out! Pier 39 houses their decorated tree right at the main entrance and pictures with Santa can be taken until December 24th! The 555 California Street tree is a hidden gem in the financial district and usually has no tourists so it is a perfect spot for your Christmas tree pictures! Another great place to take in the holiday spirit is the outside of Grace Cathedral – with the colorful lights and beautiful architecture, you’re sure to be put in the holiday mood. City Hall lights their “Rainbow World Tree of Hope” every year at the top of the marble staircase; this is the most picturesque tree in all of San Francisco. Also, stop by Ghiradelli Sqaure for a sundae and walk around the beautiful lights and sights!

Most of the downtown San Francisco hotels are home to a beautifully decorated tree, but my must-see is at The Fairmont Hotel, located in the Nob Hill district (a 10 minute walk from Union Square). This hotel just gets better every year – this year, they built a two-story gingerbread house in their lobby! This will feel like a dream to visit when finals are bogging you down. If you find yourself in Union Square, the Westin St. Francis decorates their lobby with two custom-made castles and a decorated tree.

San Francisco is a gem and during the holiday season is when it shines the brightest. Be sure to take advantage of all the amazing things your city has in store for the next month to get your mind off of stress for finals!
