I moved to San Francisco around six months ago and as far as I know I haven’t visited any black owned businesses. If you’re not sure what a black owned business is exactly, I’ll explain. Black owned business are ventures that foster economic growth within the black community that are, as titled, owned by black people. The importance of these business range from strengthening the black community to job creation. These businesses create a space where black people can support each other and honor ourselves.

As we’re nearing the end of Black History Month, here are a few black owned businesses that you can support that aren’t too far from campus.

1. Auntie April’s Chicken-n-Waffles

They’ve got sweet tea, chicken-n-waffles, and it’s only two buses away from campus (use your MUNI pass people!). Sure, there may be a bit of wait time for your food but at least you know it’s fresh. When you’re in need for some soul-food staples, this is the place to run to that won’t break your bank.

2. Soyful Aromas

They specialize in candles made from soy wax, yay for using renewable resources, that take self-care to another level. If candles aren’t your thing, you can never get a mother’s day gift too early! Just make sure you don’t keep it in your dorm room. Plus they deliver.

3. Shrinky Time

Earrings can elevate an outfit and these are sure to do the trick. Created by a young female artist who’s based in Oakland, custom earrings and keychains are Shrinky Time’s forte. Plus the creator is in college, just like us, so she understands our need for budgeting. Their prices range from $8 keychains to $15 earrings.

4. Peace Pins by PeaceProspect

If you’ve been meaning to decorate a bag or a denim jacket but don’t want to go outside, this is the Etsy store for you. They make beautiful pins with designs like the Power Rangers, peace signs, and even Rihanna. While the price, $11 dollars for each pin, may seem a bit steep the pins are definitely made professionally and with care. Plus there’s a sale going on right now, buy two and you get 30% off your order.

Hopefully this list helped you find a few black owned businesses around campus and online. Or even just inspired you to look for some in your own area. Happy Black History Month!
