Why We Should All Use Natural Medicine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

We can all relate to the feeling of getting sick and immediately wanting to run to the doctor. For some of us, though, it may not always be convenient to go to the doctor, especially when you’re a college student and may be far from home.

Well, things are looking up for us. Over the years, studies have shown that using alternative medicines, such as herbs, is beneficial to your health. The practice has been around for centuries. Below are three benefits that will make you want to stock your medicine cabinet with herbs, too:

1.   Prescription drugs always seem to come with a long list of side effects that could potentially harm you, or even make you feel worse. Natural medicine doesn’t have those toxic side effects. This is probably the biggest benefit to using natural medicine—now you can heal your body without causing more harm.

2.   Using natural medicines will help cure your sickness for the time being, but they also strengthen your immune system for the future. The ingredients in some herbs are naturally found in our bodies, which causes the healing process we all have to kick in when we’re sick . It also makes us stronger so we don’t get sick as often in the future.

3.   I know we can all relate to this one: wanting to save money, especially as a college student. Prescription drugs can be very costly and again, harder to access depending on your situation. It brings a feeling of ease knowing that you can go to your local grocery store and pick up ingredients that can be used as a form of treatment. Popular herbs include mint, which can be used to fight a cold; fennel, which can be used to help relieve digestive issues; ginger, which helps an upset stomach; and honey, which is a great antibacterial and cough suppressant.

Using natural medicine is becoming the new thing to do. It continues to become more recognized and popular as time goes on. This movement toward natural healing is beneficial for us all. I hope that next time you are feeling under the weather, you resort to Publix rather than the clinic.
