USF Divest: The Video Everyone’s Talking About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Have you seen this video popping up on your Newsfeed recently? Well, if you have we aren’t surprised, considering the video got over 1,700 shares within in the first 24 hours, and over 127 thousand views.

As the numbers continue to grow people are becoming more and more worried with an issue that most students weren’t even aware of.

The video is claiming that USF is investing college student’s tuition funds into companies that neglect the environment and support fossil fuels, private prisons with racist ideas, and companies that make international war weapons.

So it is no surprise why this video is getting so much attention.

Some people are claiming that this video lacks actual evidence, and is purposing things that are “easier said than done” such as their three big goals:

1.Divest from bad corporations

2.Create a student/faculty/staff board to review the companies they are investing in

3.Create ethical policy

Their Facebook page is asking students who do support their mission to send emails directly to Judy Genshaft, who is basically the real star of this entire video.

The video opens with Judy ignoring students trying to talk to her about these issues, and as the clip rolls, they talk about her recent pay increase and how she is ingorning this divesment action that 89% of students voted for.

So what do you guys think? Do you think the USF Divest’s goals are achievable? Do you think Judy is at fault or is being attacked? Do you think we should be concerned about these issue or just focus on our education? Let Hercampus know in the comments below!

Senior at the University of South Florida Studying Psychology and Communication with a concentrate in family relations.
I am a junior at the University of South Florida. I am specializing in Public Relations while pursuing certificates in Business and Visualization & Design. I hope to one day combine all of these and pursue law in the entertainment and even branch out to other passions in family law. While I am studying to achieve these dreams, I have furthered my collection of coffee cups and obsession with caffeine. I currently work as a barista and love to whip up new ideas, whether it be actual coffee creations or branding ideas. My other hobbies include enjoying short walks to the movies and my computer. This is usually to catch up on the latest and greatest shows. If it's not film, it is music. I love the thrill of listening to live music of my favorite and new bands. These inspire me to discover my individuality and brand, while challenging myself to help others find theirs.
