How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Whether this is your first or fifth year celebrating Valentine’s Day in a long distance relationship, it is always hard to come up with some great gift ideas. Here are a few that will show your other half just how much you care.

Valentine’s Day-Themed Care Package

You may send care packages regularly, so make this one different. Include heart-shaped candy, Valentine’s Day confetti, a hand-written love note and anything else that will show your honey just how much you care.
You can find some cheap “xo” tissue paper at places like Dollar Tree to line the inside of the box. While you are there pick up some red wrapping paper and wrap the outside of the box before sending it out. You could also decorate the inside with pictures of the two of you by cutting and glueing them onto the bottom and sides of the box.

USF Valentine’s Day Phone Call

The USF Green and Gold Guides who give campus tours are featuring a fundraiser. For only $1 they will call your Valentine (or anyone else you think would enjoy this) and sing a song of your choice. If your recipient doesn’t answer the phone, the Green and Gold Guides will leave a message of them singing the song. You have the choice of your recipient knowing the song is from you or leaving it anonymously. It is only $1 per song. Choose a song that is special to you and your significant other and you are sure to leave them feeling loved all day.

Skype Dinner Date

It hurts to be spending Valentine’s Day without your significant other, but there is the option of having a Skype date. To some, this may seem insignificant but to those who live miles away, it could mean the world. Decide on a meal that you are your man want to have for dinner, pick it up and take it home. Whether you have a favorite restaurant or date spot, bring it home and create a low-key, romantic atmosphere. Light some candles and Skype each other while you enjoy your meal. Flirt and talk like you would in a normal date and it will be just like you’re together. The up-side of this? Even if you both are busy on Valentine’s Day, you can easily schedule for another night without worrying about making reservations!

Movie Date

Many couples enjoy going to the movie theater for Valentine’s Day, but think about: how much do you talk in a movie? Hopefully, not very much. Find a movie that you both want to see at times as close as possible. Both of you will see the movie in your own city, but then call each other as soon as the credits begin to roll to discuss! I know that when my boyfriend and I go to a movie we don’t talk until then anyway.

Ten Things I Love About You

When you are miles apart from your significant other on such a romantic day, it can seem as though the hours drag until it is over. Instead of relentlessly checking your watch every ten minutes, send him ten texts throughout the day that say why you care. Since it is through text message you can keep your message short and sweet. I’m sure you will be making your very special Valentine smile throughout the day.
