Being single on Valentine’s Day is great: you don’t have to waste money on a stupid gift, you don’t have to dress up for an uncomfortable dinner, and you can do whatever you please. But because people make such a big deal of such a meaningless holiday and make you feel bad for not having a partner, as if it were any different from the other 364 days of the year, you can end up feeling pretty bad about yourself. So gather your single besties, prepare some tasty snacks, and here’s a list of movies y’all can enjoy together.
1. Never Been Kissed
This rom-com classic starring the beautiful Drew Barrymore is about a newspaper editor who dresses up as a high school student and goes back to her very own high school to do research for an article, but finds what she least expected: love.
2. You Again
This hilarious movie is about a publicist, Marni (Kristen Bell) who has to go back to her hometown for her brother’s wedding, only to find out that he is marrying her high school enemy. After causing chaos and almost getting her brother to not marry her arch nemesis, Marni mends her relationship with her enemy and unexpectedly finds love.
3. Clueless
Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma and set in a ritzy high school in Beverly Hills, Clueless follows the insanely popular Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) and her many attempts to play Cupid, which often sets chaos within her inner circle. Emboldened after succesfully pairing two of her teachers together, Cher then attempts to make-over socially inept new girl Tai (played by the late Brittany Murphy) and set her up with the most popular boy in school. This infinitely-quotable 90’s staple is all about high school: its dramas, struggles and relationships; all of which are complicated is you’re as “clueless” as Cher, the 90’s American version of Mia Colucci.
4. 50 First Dates
This romantic comedy, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, is about a girl who suffers from memory loss and lives the exact same day everyday. Though love finds her, he will have to remind her everyday how and why they fell in love.
5. 13 Going on 30
A classic romantic comedy about a 13-year-old girl who makes a wish on her birthday, wakes up as a 30-year-old woman (Jennifer Garner), and reunites with her best childhood friend Matt (pre-Hulk Mark Ruffalo) to sort out the chaos of her life.
6. The Fault in Our Stars
While you may have already seen or read this tragic story about friendships, love, loss, and cancer; and you may hate John Green for it as much as I do, watching this movie on Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to cry your eyes out and forget about your misery and how sad you may be because your crush ignores you everytime he sees you (me irl). Watching this movie might even make you feel lucky that you are not in love.
The story follows Hazel (Shailene Woodley), who has a life-threatening form of cancer, and Gus (Ansel Elgort) who is a survivor. The two fall in love after meeting in a support group for cancer patients and embark on a whilrwind romance with a tragic ending. Bring tissues!
7. The Last Song
This beautiful story, based on the Nicholas Sparks book and starring Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, is yet another great excuse to ugly cry. This coming of age movie is all about love, loss, and most importantly, family.
