Worship

Geraldine Rodriguez

You’re nicer to your body now.

You feed it often and you always keep a water bottle at hand to remain hydrated.

Your pants start to feel tight and keep a hard grip on your waist,

A couple of years back that would have filled your eyes with tears

And brought you to your knees

Granting you no rest but,

You know better.

It’s better to have a well-fed body with some meat on the bones than a body that’s hollow

And sad

And bent

Like a jasmine tree turning yellow,

What once was white and enchanting.

Decaying on the ground, losing its balance.

You stood up on your feet.

Now you’re like a beautiful dahlia

Blooming in search of sunlight absorbing all the sunshine it can see.

You feel better,

More at peace with the skin covering your bones.

And maybe that tight grip on your pants isn’t a reason to be sad.

Maybe you’ll outgrow those pants,

Maybe you won’t,

But you will look at them and realize,

They’re just pants.

Your skin is just skin, but

Your body is a temple,

And you’re finally worshipping it.
