5 Ways to Better Yourself This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Every summer is basically the same. We always say we are going to start projects and better yourself now that school isn’t around for most of us. But where should we start? And how do we get the motivation to do things. Here are a few things that can help you better and love yourself this summer.

Get Creative: Instead of watching The Office for the sixth time, try busting out arts and crafts supplies and make something. Maybe make a vision board with old magazines. Or have a DIY Spa day in your own place. Or maybe even cut up and decorate some new high-waisted mom-jeans. Turn on a new album you haven’t gotten around to listening to and make some jewelry. Getting your hands dirty with glitter and glue may be the perfect way to unwind and do something productive.

Meditate: Meditation has been swinging off peoples lips so fast these days but don’t knock it till you try it. There are tons of meditation apps like Headspace that will guide through. The perfect thing about meditation is it is time for you. Take some time for you to quiet your mind and your post-finals anxieties. Whether it’s in your car before you go to work or in your room when you wake up, you can meditate anywhere and it’ll make all the difference in the world.

Read: Remember when you actually had time to sit down on your bed and read a book and just get lost in the words. Maybe take some time for you this summer and read that new book you bought last summer that has been sitting on your shelf. Even if it’s just for a few minutes at first, maybe try reading something new everyday. You’d be surprised how much happier a little less screen time and more imagination will make you.

Exercise: Summer has always been the time that we tell ourselves, “Okay after school ends, I’ll workout.” And it just doesn’t happen. Don’t worry you’re not alone. But maybe this summer start by taking a walk outside, when it’s not a million degrees out. Then maybe go to the gym or jog outside. Starting small with lifestyle changes, isn’t a bad thing and will actually make habits stick longer.

Do The Thing: You know what it is. The thing you’ve been telling yourself you were going to do forever now. Whether it’s starting a YouTube channel, a blog, a book, or learning to ride a bike. Do it! This summer is all about you. You should show yourself the love you deserve by finally doing the things you want and starting to make your dreams come true.

Make dates with yourself to hold yourself accountable. Say, Mondays will be the days I apply for new jobs. Or Sundays are the days that I will post videos on YouTube. Even if the viewers or the audience is small when you start, you are still committing to something you have wanted to be doing for so long. And that’s bettering yourself.
