5 Academic Mistakes to Avoid Making During Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Have you ever made a mistake before?

I know I have. From failing three classes, making c’s and not taking the necessary time to study before a test. I’ve done it all. I noticed that while it may seem like some people have it all together. They might. I know for me, I don’t like talking to people about my struggles or failures. But I also know that when people are transparent about their struggles or mistakes. It tends to helps others and makes what they’re saying more relatable. I wanted to let you know that while some people might excel in school and tend to never make mistakes. Not all of us are like that. I wanted to be transparent with you and discuss the academic mistakes that I made that you should avoid making.

Academic Mistakes

  • Not Asking For Help– I’m not the one to ask for help when I need it. I do my best to figure it out for myself before I even think about asking for help. I realized that it doesn’t hurt to ask for help. It doesn’t make you less smart or anything. If you need it , ask for it.
  • Not Studying Ahead of Time – I used to wait until the last minute to study. I realized I did better on the tests that I studied 3 or 4 days before than the ones I crammed for. Cramming doesn’t work. Repeat. Cramming doesn’t work
  • Not Knowing My Overall goal– If you don’t know what you’re working for then you’re not going to work as hard as you should. If you have a goal in mind or a plan of action. You’re more likely to put all your energy and time into it
  • Not Applying Myself– I didn’t put my full energy into my work and my assignments. I rarely  thought about my goals or the things I hope to accomplish. I just did the bare minimum.
  • Lacking Confidence – If you don’t believe in yourself and don’t know your worth. You will rarely do well. If you know you can do it and you do the work. There is nothing you can do wrong at that point. Just keep working at it

2017 was not the best academic year for me. I didn’t apply myself or believe in myself. I prayed for last minute miracles and hope that the grades that I knew I didn’t deserve would show up on my final grades. I know that 2017 was my growth year. I have to know what it feels like to fail and to be at a low point to know that I don’t really want to feel like that again. I know that 2018 is the year that  I will do better and be better.
