Summer to Fall Outfit Transitioning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

We all know the struggle, especially us folks from the Midwest area: your alarm clock goes off, you check your weather app, and you feel clueless. How is one supposed to dress for weather like this?? The few weeks where it’s not quite fall but not still summer can consist of everything from downpour, blazing temperatures, frost, mist, fog… you name it, it could possibly be happening outside your window. As college students, it is likely that we have to dress for our entire day because we won’t see our dorm until late at night, so being prepared for the craziest weather changes is vital. Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve acquired to help make this transition a little less painful:

  1. I rarely leave the dorms without my umbrella in my backpack. Even if there is a 20% chance of rain next Wednesday, that could potentially threaten your day and your great outfit. Buy a compact umbrella that’ll fit easily in a pocket of your bag and always expect precipitation because there is nothing worse than dripping all the way through your 2-hour lecture.
  2. Layer, layer, layer. The temperature range throughout the day can be your worst nightmare, especially if you wore a sweater to start out in the 50-degree morning and came out of your afternoon class super sweaty because it’s not 85 degrees (or vice versa). My common practice is to get used to carrying my coat around with me early on while also wearing some sort of a pull over sweater or cardigan for those in-between times of day.
  3. Think long and hard about your shoe choice. I know that we all really want to make sandal season last a little longer, but are cold or wet toes worth it? I tend to stick with boots or sneakers during this time of year, flats if I’m feeling real risky. On the wetter days, I will sometimes even throw an extra pair of socks in my bag because there is nothing worse than wet socks.

I hope these tips are helpful to those struggling with this issue like I am this time of year! I hope you all can stay dry/warm/cool/generally happy because once we get into fall season, it’s one of the most beautiful times of year!
