Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

After nearly three long and excruciating months of winter, spring has finally arrived in Nebraska! Along with all the colorful flowers and warm sunshine, spring is also the perfect time to clean out some clutter in your life. Spring-cleaning doesn’t have to be a hassle though, and you can easily make your experience more fun.

With that in mind, here are 4 tips and tricks to catapult you into a spring-cleaning craze!

1. Get Rid of Unwanted Clothes

As some people can have a bit of a shopping addiction, it’s always a good idea to go through your clothes. You may find that shirt you’ve been searching for, or possibly find a new pair of shoes you forgot you had. However, you’ll likely find some clothes that you’ve barely worn. This is where the sorting comes in.

Keep all of the clothes worn on a regular basis and try to donate all of the clothes you never wear. Places like the Good Will and Salvation Army are almost always able to take your donations.

Another option is to try and resell your unwanted clothing items. This method usually works best when your clothing is new or slightly worn, but nevertheless, it’s still money in your pocket! If you’re looking for immediate cash, take your clothes to a consignment store like Plato’s Closet. Located in south Lincoln, this store will assess the value of your clothes and give you cash all within the same day.

If you’d rather not tote all of your clothes across town, there are also apps that assist you in selling your clothes. Some of the most popular are Vinted and Poshmark, both of which allow you to sell and buy clothes.

2. Swap out winter clothing

While you’ve already got all your clothes out, you can also swap out your winter clothing for spring clothing. As unpredictable as Nebraska weather is, though, it might be smart to not fully put away your warmer clothes. Keep some of those sweaters and pants out for cooler days. This will allow for a smooth transition into the warmer months.

3. Add Some Color

With the outdoors being so colorful, you may start to notice how dark and dreary your room has gotten over the winter. An easy fix to this problem is adding some fresh flowers to instantly brighten the mood. For those with not much of a green thumb, fake flowers will also do the trick. Stores like Joann’s and Michael’s usually have sales on fake flowers around this time of year, so pick out your favorite and slide them into a vase or even a mason jar.

If you’re not the flowery type, another way to add color is with some throw pillows. While they can sometimes be pricey, stores such as Target and Wal-Mart usually sell them for cheaper than you’d find elsewhere. Besides, they often have cute and colorful pillows just for spring.

4. Find Some New Storage

In all of the chaos of tests and homework assignments, sometimes your belongings can just get thrown on the desk or in the corner. Take some time to put items back in their place or find some new ways to store them. For smaller items like pens and pencils, you can redecorate old containers and mason jars with colorful tape or ribbon to make them more exciting. For bigger items, try to use plastic storage containers to hide the clutter. A great solution for smaller spaces is using under-the-bed containers that run long and flat, perfect for underneath your bed.

Hopefully by now you’re feeling inspired, so get out there and clean like you mean it!
