My New Go-To Tunes: Us the Duo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

I recently got to attend the Pentatonix concert at the Nebraska State Fair (it was amazing!). What I wasn’t prepared for, though, was to be also blown out of the water by the opening act. I had no idea coming into the concert who was even opening; I was way too concerned with getting there and whether or not I could take my personal pan pizza in with me.

All of a sudden, an adorable couple walks out onto the stage and introduces themselves as “Us the Duo.” Now, I still didn’t know who they were because I had never been huge on Vine when it existed, but that is where they got their start as a husband and wife doing covers of songs:

Now they are performing live shows, and have even written a lot of their own songs! My three favorites are:

“I’m Me”: This was one of the first songs that they sang at their concert. I was struck by how many lines related to my life! To start, I play the clarinet and love to “be sassy with my clarinet.” Also, “I never fit in. I get lost in the crowd. I wanna be cool, but I can’t quite figure it out.” This song has become my personal mantra as I am learning to accept and love myself for who I am.

“Smile & Keep Your Head Up”: Life can get really hard sometimes; it is just a given. This song helps to lift my spirits as I’m walking in between classes and helps me remember that the sun is always shining on the other side.

“No Matter Where You Are”: This song…oh my gosh. They wrote this to sing as their wedding vows. It pulls at all of my heartstrings! It’s so upbeat and happy and gives me hope for my future happiness. I find myself listening to this song a lot when I am missing my boyfriend.
