Alternative to the Valentine’s Day Norms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

If you’re feeling the same way about Valentine’s Day as I am, then you’re not really into the whole “big celebration” of love. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in a committed two-year relationship and I still dread the thought of celebrating the big day of love.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the holiday, but it just seems like a lot of hype to celebrate the one you love, or make the one you love spoil you or vice versa. Shouldn’t you celebrate the one who hold close every day, not just especially one day of the year?

Anyway, if you’re not into the fancy dinners, movies, extravagant gifts or elaborate dates, there are plenty of other low-key things to do with the one you love to enjoy your shared time together.

Valentine’s Day is going to be an especially beautiful day in Lincoln, weather-wise. It would be a great day to spend outdoors and exploring. You can rent bikes for little-to-no money from the outdoor center on campus. There are plenty of trails around the city as well as downtown routes that put you amongst the (not so skyscraper-ish) buildings.

I love to cook and cooking with your significant other today could bring you two closer together. Working together to make a meal that you’ll both share is an act of love in itself. Take dinner outside and head to Pioneer’s Park with a picnic blanket in hand and enjoy your meal in the company of nature. Walk off the calories after by making use of the park’s beautiful trails.

Students often forget that we have free access to the Sheldon Museum. Finally use your student status to its full potential and have a little day trip to the museum, perhaps make a stop during your bike adventure.

Maybe after looking at the glorious art that the Sheldon has to offer, you and your partner might want to try to make a masterpiece of your own. Pick up some acrylic paint and a canvas at a craft store (maybe some wine, too) and paint your own abstract work of art together!

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for dressing to the nines and spending copious amounts of money on dinners and chocolates, it’s for spending another day with the person you cherish and celebrating relationships, so make it a day filled of fun!
