Life Lesson’s Learned from Harry Potter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

“Dumbledore says people find it far easier to forgive others for being wrong than being right.” –Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Life lessons from Harry Potter:

  1. True Friendship can get you through anything. Harry, Ron, and Hermione had a true unbreakable bond. From defeating Voldemort to having teenage problems they were always there for one another.

  2. Bad guys may not look like the bad guys. Throughout the book the undefeatable trio suspects Snape for mysterious crimes, and then they realized it was another teacher.

  3. Bad guys may even be the good guys. Like Snape, we hated him for all 7 books and in the middle of the 8th one we realized he was not actually the bad guy.

  4. Heartbreak is inevitable. Like Harry and Cho, Ron and Lavender, Snape and Lily, we learn that sometimes things don’t work out the way we want.

  5. But true love lasts forever. Lily’s love for Harry protected him from the death spell and grants him protection from Voldemort. After Lily died, Snape’s future was forever changed. True love lasts forever and just because a person dies doesn’t mean your love for them dies too.

  6. Money isn’t everything. Ron envies Harry for having his parents wealth but Harry envies Ron for his large tight knit family.

  7. The family you are born into matters less than the family you choose. Harry’s blood relatives were horrible to him and treated him like dirt. But even with little money Ron and his family have treated Harry like one of their own.

  8. Loss does not define you. As we may already know Harry has faced many losses. But instead of sitting and mourning those losses he treasures the memories, and it can still feel like they are here with us.

  9. Face your fears, in the books the characters had to face their fears to get what they want. Ron had to follow the spiders to help save hermione, and Harry had to face the dementors. But doing so helped them grow and overcome their fears.

  10. Most importantly, life wasted is worse than death. While Dumbledore chases Voldemort he reminds Harry that life wasted is worse than death. Voldemort wanted to live forever but everyone else does not want the pain and suffering to help him.
