How To Make a New Year’s Resolution You’ll WANT to Keep

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

How many of us can say we’ve actually kept one of our New Year’s Resolutions? I know I can’t, so this year I started thinking about the resolutions I have made in the past and why I haven’t kept any of them. Most of my resolutions in the past went along the lines of “work out more” or “start focusing in school more” which are things that should probably be part of your yearly plan every year, not just this upcoming one.

Instead, I decided that my resolution this year wasn’t going to be one that would show up on a “Most Popular Resolution” list. Here is a list of what I came up with. Take you’re pick!

  1. Set a monthly allowance (say $50, or whatever fits into your budget) and use it to that makes you feel fabulous. Having this set limit will decrease your chances of a spending spree.
  2. Don’t take part in the newest fad diet; they’re not all they’re cracked up to be.
  3. Pick one of those cool crafts from your Pinterest page and ACTUALLY create it with your friends.
  4. Go to the nearest department store and have a professional do your makeup. Learn what types of makeup work best for you.
  5. Instead of texting 24/7, choose one friend or family member every week and give them a quick call.
  6. Tell the guy who you have feelings for that you want something more and hope for the best.
  7. Think of food you say you don’t like but have really never tried it, then go try it. Then if you don’t like it, you can at least know for sure.
  8. Do something with your younger cousins or siblings who look up to you once a month.
  9. Back up all your photos, so if anything ever did happen (knock on wood) you wouldn’t lose all those precious memories
  10. Give your boyfriend a handwritten letter or note to surprise him. It means a lot more than a text.
  11. Surprise somebody, it’ll feel good to see him or her happy.
  12. Turn any boring one-hour drive into a road trip. Get snacks, make a new cd, and sing at the top of your lungs. It’ll make any boring drive more fun.
  13. Go to the grocery store and buy a cooking magazine. Flip to a random page and make that recipe! We have to learn to cook somewhere…
  14. Have a DIY spa night with your girlfriends or buy yourself. Buy facemasks, a new nail polish, and a deep conditioning treatment. You deserve to pamper yourself!
  15. Allow yourself a tiny taste of a guilty pleasure every now and then. We don’t have to give up EVERYTHING!
