Friends with Fitbits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Friends with Fitbits… for me there are very few benefits to this. I am one of few people that does not have one, and the temptation to get one comes and goes. Just being around my Fitbit fanatic friends I have heard everything you could think about a Fitbit. I don’t go through a day without hearing something relating to their step count, sleeping patterns or the fact that they forgot to charge their Fitbit and will have a difficult time getting through the day without it. Here are somethings that I discovered by being around my fanatic friends.

The number 10,000 and the vibration that follows is like music to their ears. Their goal for the day is complete and they are satisfied. It’s so funny to see them light up when it happens it’s like they won the lottery.

However, when the end of the day is coming up and the 10,000 steps are not on reach… panic mode sets in. My friends will just get up and walk around the room or even in place to reach it. Now it has become a normality that I have accepted.

Competitions like Weekend Warrior, are where only the strong will survive. When my friends had this challenge they would literally be moving constantly and checking their steps and my friend’s steps on the app to check up what place they were on. The app even let them send messages to taunt each other to make them feel intimidated. When the competition is over the ultimate prize are well deserved bragging rights.

Because everything that happens to them actively gets recorded, I am usually told everyday how they slept, how many calories they burned and how active they were. They are either happy with their results or disappointed in the fact that they literally didn’t do anything all day just by looking at their totals at the end of the day. I am just satisfied that I got out of bed and did something productive with my day!

And if they are not wearing it or forgot to charge it, their day might as well be over. It’s like it became an attachment to their body!
