Explorations of UNH

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

As the weather begins to turn colder and the leaves change, the campus seems to come alive with the colors of the season. Fall is the greatest time of year at UNH, and there are so many places around campus where you can enjoy the classic scenery of New Hampshire (and escape all the homework you have to do). Now is the perfect time of year to take advantage of places like T-Hall Lawn, College Woods, etc., before the winter months send you into hibernation. Everyone should take the time to explore the nooks and crannies of the school grounds and beyond; maybe you’ll find your favorite new spot!

College Woods is a perfect place for walks, bike rides, runs, and relaxing. With over 60 acres designated for these uses, the trails can take you to places you never even knew about. Throughout the woods there are bridges, streams, wildlife, and even benches to stop and enjoy the view. Although well-known, College Woods always serves as the perfect place to take in the calming quietness of the forest, and maybe even climb a tree! Another favorite spot on campus are the trails behind the Gables. The “trail” connects to a bridge that is actually used for horse riding and leads to the stables, but if you continue through the woods you will be lead around a large pond behind the Farm Services. The sun sets perfectly over the water, and there are logs set up for sitting and relaxing.

The pond behind the Gables is surrounded by fall foliage, and birds were peacefully swimming in the water when we visited. The trail extends all the way around the pond and connects to Spinney Lane. It’s a great place for a run through the woods (just make sure there aren’t any horses behind you LOL).

Lastly, Cowell Stadium can be the perfect viewing spot for the spectacular Durham sunsets. At the top of the bleachers, you can watch the sky turn beautiful colors over Bremner Field. Surprisingly, very few people are at the track as the sun sets, and it’s a great place to sit and relax especially after a run. Be sure to catch at least one sunset, because once you see the sky at dusk, you’ll always be looking out your window at the cotton-candy colors of the clouds.

Make it a goal for you and your friends to visit these places in the upcoming weeks, before the leaves are gone and the cold sets in. If you don’t do much exploring but want to spend some time outside, then be sure to check out all the beauty that your campus has to offer. UNH students are so lucky to have such a beautiful campus!
