This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Whether you want to listen to a variety of new music or keep up with the latest score of the UNH hockey team, WUNH 91.3 FM has a program that will cater to your interest! Check out our latest Campus Celebrity who oversees it all, the WUNH General Manager Brendan Phelan!

Major: Marketing and Business Administration

Year: Senior

Describe your duties as WUNH general manager.

As general manager, I kind of oversee all aspects of the station. So we have someone who is the Business Manager and Promotions Director and someone who oversees scheduling. I just kind of manage and oversee all of that. I also basically just make sure everything operates smoothly just making sure stuff gets fixed in a timely manner. Another big thing is that I oversee all the legal aspects of the station and I make sure that we follow the expectations of the FCC guidelines.

How do you stay organized overseeing everything at the station?

I have a great team for one. It’s great to have people who are specific to each department that oversee all those duties. It’s great to have the lounge we have a exec meeting there once a week and then a meeting once a month with the whole station. It’s all about constant communication.

How did you first become involved with WUNH?

I came to UNH knowing that I kind of wanted to be a DJ. My dad mentioned that he was a DJ in college. I thought that sounded pretty cool and just talking to the people here at the time it just seemed interesting. Coming in here in the old studio and seeing all the music just in your face I thought that was awesome. So, by November my Freshman year, I was an official DJ.

Explain the process of becoming an exec member at WUNH.

Typically what happens is around November or December time we’ll go around to members and say if you’re interested in a position, you should approach the person who has it now. That way they can get trained a little bit and then in March we hold elections with everyone involved at WUNH.

How was the first few months being the new General Manager?

It was a little overwhelming because our budget is not as straightforward as it seems I was wondering how you’re supposed to track this. I made this whole Excel spreadsheet for it but there is a good support system here.

Give us an idea about what steps you have to take to become a certified DJ.

To become a certified DJ you need to complete 10 hours of shadowing and go to one or two meetings so that we can get your contact information. Once you complete your shadowing hours, you then record a clearance tape and you can become a fully cleared DJ to broadcast your own show. Our new DJs broadcast a show during “non-drive times” during 2 to 6am and then they will have a 10pm to 2am show. After successfully completing broadcasts during those times, a DJ can have shows during “drive times” which is during the day.

What is your favorite part about being apart of WUNH?

Definitely the people. I have made some of my best friends here at WUNH. It’s really fun hanging out with people who are like-minded all the time. I also like coming here to just hangout in the lounge or do homework.

What role does WUNH play in your life as a student here at UNH?

It plays a big role because I started so early in my career here at UNH. It’s really helpful to be apart of WUNH as a  business major and being able to put my skills to use outside of the classroom.

Are there any particularly popular shows?

Actually our polka show is really popular! Our DJs play 60% new music from our promoters and they can play any other music they want in the studio for the other 40% of their show. We also have three different sports talk shows and we broadcast out of the press box that we share with TNH at the Whitt. We also have a news department that airs a few short clips of news a week. You can listen to us on 91.3 fm or stream us live at WUNH.org!
