5 Reasons Why Durham is Great in the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

If you’re staying in Durham for the summer and not sure how to spend your weekends or days off, here’s a few ideas!

Wiswall Bridge

If you’re feeling adventurous and looking for something fun to do, take a drive over to the Wiswall Bridge. It’s only about 10 minutes from campus and jumping off the bridge on a hot day with your friends is super fun. If you’re scared of heights don’t worry because it’s not too high at all!

Ogunquit Beach

Only about 30 minutes from Durham is one of the nicest beaches in New England. Footbridge beach is in Ogunquit, Maine and is such a great beach to escape to. There is also tons of shopping downtown and food!

Hampton Beach

Also another option for a great beach day is Hampton beach. It’s close by and close to las olas…what could be better. Sitting on the wall enjoying an ice cream or your las olas makes for an ideal night!

Ice Cream

RIP to Kaleidascoop….but thankfully the Dairy Bar has longer hours in the summer so you can go for a late night cone. Also not far away there’s Dover Delite, another ice cream place for your sweet tooth. On the more expensive side, Coldstone is right near the fox run mall and right next to Chipotle so you can kill two birds with one stone! Hey and you never know who you may see at the Dairy Bar…

Slip and Slide

Warm weather means spending more time outside so why not make the most of it!? There’s plenty of places on campus you can enjoy the outdoors whether it be spending time in a hammock relaxing or heading downtown for some coffee with friends. My personal favorite would have to be creating your own slip and slide. All you need is a tarp, some dish soap, and some water and you’ll definitely be in for a good time. (It’s even more fun if you play flip cup at the same time…if you’re 21…)

Mendum Pond

Some of you may have never heard of it but at Mendum Pond with your student ID you can go for FREE! It’s run by campus rec and you can rent canoes for just $5 an hour. It’s a great way to get outside and the pond is huge.
