10 Reasons Why We’re Crazy for Acai Bowls!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Acai bowls are so trendy and fun! If you haven’t tried it yet, please make it your top priority! Here are 10 reasons why we are huge fans of acai bowls.

  1. Amazing ingredients! It’s greatness in a bowl. It contains smashed acai berries, peanut or almond butter, granola, coconut shreds, and yummy fruit (throw in chocolate chips to add a little sweetness). Customize the bowl in whatever way your heart and taste buds desire! Together, all of the ingredients make one yummy treat!

2. Conveniently located at UNH! Not 1, but 2 places are right in downtown Durham! The SPOT and The Juicery (which is also in Portsmouth!) serve the acai bowls for a price that doesn’t hurt our college budget. There’s no need to drive, which is an advantage. You can go on your way to get coffee or after your classes.

3. It’s all in the name! Don’t lie–saying,  “Can I have an acai bowl, please?” is just as fun as eating it! I said it wrong for the longest time until I glanced to my left as I was in line at The SPOT and saw it written out on the wall. I was politely corrected, and I didn’t mind. The unique fruit (pronounced ahh-sigh-ee) is interesting to say and makes it something we all can enjoy!

4. Healthy benefits! The acai berries contain “anthocyanins”, a plant form of antioxidant associated with the ability to lower cholesterol levels in our blood stream. While we enjoy this awesome treat, we’re helping our heart, minds, and bodies regain strength and acquire good health.

5. Super tasty! We know the ingredients separately and have had them all throughout our lifetime. Putting it all together makes up for one delicious treat.  Never bitter and never overly sweet, acai bowls are just right.

6. Great breakfast or mid-afternoon snack! Whether you’re just starting the day, recovering from the gym, or tackling the homework, grab an acai bowl for a boost of energy! It’s just the right amount to fill you up and keep you moving throughout the day. (Pic creds: Annelise Gawlak, UNH sophomore!)

7. Gives us spring fever! I can honestly eat acai bowls all year-round, but there’s something about the vibrant color and taste that gives off spring fever! We’ve been buggin’ out with the snow here in NH, but pretty soon, we can bring them to T-Hall on a warm April day and look onto Main Street! (Pic creds: our very own, Bri Miller, UNH sophomore!)

8. Perfect date with your girlfriends!!  After class or on the weekends, I love getting together with friends. Getting acai bowls is one of the best things to do! While you’re dining, you can chat about which episode of “Stranger Things” you are on, the stressful exams and homework, or the boy that’s been causing trouble! (Pic creds: our very own, Taylor Livingston, UNH sophomore!)

9. Convenient size! Can’t stay and chat?? In a rush?? You can take acai bowls on the go as you walk to class or before you head to work. They’re not super messy, so no need to worry, and they are easy to travel with! (pic creds: Jess Meilman, UMD freshman!)

10. Photogenic! Last but not least, the picture is worth a thousand words (and it’s the best part before you dive in)! The purple-ish color of the acai topped with the other ingredients makes an Instagram-worthy photo.  It’s fitting for a Snapchat story or a feature in your FB album. Once people see that, they’ll be jealous and eager to try it! (Pic creds: our very own Bri Miller!) So, hopefully, you’re loving them a little bit more. Enjoy ladies and treat yourself to healthy (and awesome) acai bowls!
