10 Reasons to Go Greek

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Panhellenic Recruitment is well underway here at UNH. Everywhere you turn you can see a girl in her Greek letters, a flyer telling you to go Greek, or sidewalk chalk encouraging you to do the same. You may be a little confused, even slightly overwhelmed. Is Greek life something that you should join? What does it mean to be in a sorority? Why should I rush? To ease your mind I have compiled a list of just the beginning of all the things joining a sorority can give you.

1. A Home Away from Home

Do you live in Christensen? Or stoke? Those couches are none too appealing to relax after a long day. The lounge itself is far from anything you want to spend your time “lounging” in. Welcome to a sorority house, a version of your own home, with comfy couches, a TV room, and a kitchen that does not resemble a dining hall.

2. Endless T-shirts

Can you even count the number of Greek life t-shirts you’ve seen in these last two weeks? Neither can we. One plus to going Greek is numerous bids day and go Greek t-shirts. Not the t-shirt type? Not a problem. You will have a house full of girls, and hundreds of sisters whose closets will become your own personal mall.

3. Untapped Martha Steward Abilities

Have any of you seen the “Pinterest Fails” page and thought “I don’t even think I could manage the fail….” Not to worry, between taking a little and recruitment you will become a crafting pro! This doesn’t even include the baking… whether you want to bake or want to eat… warm cookies and apple pies await you from your sisters, and personal sorority cook (score!).

4. The Ability to make a Difference

Whether you want to help a philanthropy, or help the community, you will have an abundance of community service opportunities at your fingertips. Whether it be small or large, every day you have the opportunity to make a difference in today’s world. Add in the help of your sisters, and the entire Greek community, and you are unstoppable.

5. A Caffeine Fix

Like coffee? Don’t like coffee but like singing in the car? Perfect. If you haven’t heard of the Coffee Station, also known as the “hut” and “shack” you are in for a treat. The perfect distance from campus to relax and belt out a few songs, and did I mention the best coffee you will ever have?  You will become sisters with upperclassmen (with cars, that may share your coffee addiction) who spend much of their free time bonding over group coffee trips.

6. An Exercise Partner

Whether you get a group to go to the Whit to try out your Zumba skills, or decide to release your competitive side in an intramural, you will never be without a workout buddy. Long walks, or re-teaching yourself to ride a bike, someone will always be up to join you.

7. A Study Buddy

There’s always those classes no one wants to take (cough cough Accounting). Lucky for you with 100 girls chances are one of the seniors is an accounting major, and what you’re doing in intro to accounting is simple math to her at this point. Don’t know what classes to take? You now have a diverse group of friends who can give you advice, along with specific class and teacher horror stories that are sure to give you a laugh.

8. A Wing Woman

In typical girl fashion we have your wing women ready. Ready for a night out, to help you look nice for class to impress that cute boy, or to Facebook creep until you fall asleep. These wing women will be with you for the rest of your life, from your first relationship, to standing beside you on your wedding day.

9. A Shoulder to Cry on

Everyone has bad days. Imagine having a whole house of girls ready to help you through yours.  Don’t worry about one or two friends being in class or home for the weekend, ring the doorbell of your house and rest easy on a sisters bed crying, laughing, ranting, until that bad day is the best day.

10. A Best Friend, Sister, and Everything in Between

You have just joined a sisterhood, full of hundreds of women. Whether you are looking for a best friend, a mentor, a sister, or a confidant there is no better place to find one. With hundreds of unique personalities you are bound to find exactly who you are looking for, and exactly what you need.

Still not convinced? Sign up to rush. Spend the weekend getting to know great girls! Who knows, you may just find exactly where you belong.
